Remo Marco Freuler + Trains thread

We’ve gone from having to rely on Colback in the midfield to having the choice of Mangala, Kouyate, Freuler, O’Brien or Yates within a week! It was a clear problem against Newcastle which has been addressed promptly. Excellent signs that the club are not messing around.

It will be interesting to see how that midfield shapes up now, I thought Mangala and O’Brien were both top draw today and looked like a really good partnership, but Freuler won’t have signed to sit on the bench. Exciting times.

So he's like the new McGovern. Totally under-rated and yet runs the whole show:

"Who is this McGovern? I've never heard of him yet he ran the midfield" Gunter Netzer, 1979

"Who is this Freuler? I've never heard of him yet he ran the midfield" Jurgen Klopp, 2022

He's getting pelters by our fans then, they slated McGovern even though Clough took him to every club.

Indeed. I guess Cafú will leave and Colback will be a last resort in midfield and a LB cover. Even so, it is hard to understand who the two starters will be. I suppose O'Brien, Yates and Kouyaté will contend for one spot and Freuler and Mangala for the other. That would leave Aouar for Lingard's position, however, which seems a bit odd.

I hope Cooper proves successful in managing competing egos and aspirations.

I have no doubts he will be, that’s one of Coopers key strengths amongst many others. Last season he managed to incorporate players that had previously been cast off and keep them happy even if they were sitting on the bench and coming on for 15-20 mins per game.

Looking at our bench today we were really lacking depth, players like Hammond, Mighten, Taylor with all due respect are not going to make much of an impact at this level, and Cafu was our only CM option. So while people may find 14-15 signings a bit OTT, actually with the 5 substitute rule strength in depth is going to be so crucial and these guys are going to turn us from a Championship team with a few prem quality players into an actual premier league standard squad. It’s excellent work all round.

The only way I can square the circle of having this many midfielders is that we are going to rely on the midfield a lot for changing shape and shoring up the defence, today Mangala and O'Brien were getting through an ungodly amount of work tracking around the field to manage the ebb and flow of where the ball was moving around to try and avoid what happened against Newcastle. With a stacked bench they can do this at full pelt for 60 and then get replaced, kind of like how things are managed in rugby (a sport I know a lot more about than football).

"Finishers" to coin a Jones phrase or to stick with football "strength and depth"

I think it’s the depth that will be critical and having it will hopefully keep us in this division. If we have no depth other teams will soon cotton on and whilst they can change 5 players we either run first 11 into ground or bring on less quality which is likely to lead us conceding in last 3rd of match.

Change in formation perhaps ?

Away, maybe we will play with 3 midfielders in the middle as it was clear against Newcastle that we were overrun in midfield - remo, O'Brien and Mangala.

A complete generalisation but Switzerland to me always seems like the biggest melting pot in Europe, there doesn't seem to be a "Swiss look" if that makes sense? Another generalisation but they all seem to be so well spoken and intelligent as well.
Doesn’t it have the best standard of living in the world? I could be wrong but I guess they value education and spend on it as well. But I get what you mean, I suppose they do border many countries so probably get influence from France, Italy and France depending on where you are from in Switzerland.

Every house has a nuclear bomb shelter, so it’s worth living there for that alone.

And it’s basically impossible to invade.
