Oliver „No Middle Name“ Glasner

I can probably give a better insight into what Oliver Glasner is like than anyone else on this forum.

I was head of the Palace video (media) team during the season Palace won the FA Cup. I was around the training ground five days a week, travelled with the squad throughout pre-season, went home and away to nearly every game, travelled on the team bus and plane, and celebrated on the pitch after Palace won the FA Cup.

I'm not going to go into any behind the scenes transfer details or anything I've seen or heard regarding his relationship with the Palace ownership, as I don't want to be the person spreading information that's meant to remain confidential. So please don't ask me about any of that either.

He's a great tactician. He adapts his team to the players he has available. Yes, Palace played with wing-backs, but that's because it suited the squad. His favourite formation is a 4-4-2.

He's also extremely ruthless when he needs to be. If a player isn't up to his standards, he has no problem sending them across the road to the academy or moving them on. Rob Holding and Sam Johnstone are prime examples of that.
He may come across as a fairly laid-back guy in the media, but he's not someone who takes any nonsense. He's also excellent at delivering pre-match and half-time team talks.

Expect his press conferences to be extremely detailed, sometimes even too detailed. There were occasions where they caused a bit of panic internally because he'd reveal more than people would have liked.
He's also incredibly passionate, very, very animated on the touchline, and it's not unusual to see him sprinting down the sideline to celebrate a last-minute goal with the players.

He's very good at bringing a squad together. There were countless times before a big game, especially when Palace were on a good run, where a BBQ would be organised at the training ground to keep the players relaxed.
He's also very good at getting promising youngsters involved from the academy, whether that's during training sessions or by giving them a taste of first-team football. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least five academy players he gave Premier League minutes to.

He gets heavily involved in training sessions, which are a fantastic blend of tactics and fun for the players. His backroom staff are also lovely, lovely guys. He genuinely has the mindset that any competition his team enters is there to be won. So don't be surprised to hear him talking about aiming to win the FA Cup, the League Cup and even the league. He means it, even if it sounds unrealistic.

There were a few sticky patches in the league where the team went on some awful runs. However, that was mainly down to how small the core playing squad was, a couple of key injuries and you really were down to filling your bench with Academy players, often there were 2 keepers on the bench too. That was all part of his overall frustration at the time.

Also, and this is massively important, he's a genuinely nice man. At Old Trafford, when Palace won 2-0, all of our camera equipment was stolen before the match. Oliver found out after the game, and his first response was to make sure the media team were treated to drinks on him to take their minds off the situation. He's a class act.

Marinakis will give him what he wants, which is backing early in the transfer window so he can assemble the squad he feels is necessary to compete. He worked wonders at Palace and I really think he'll be a great fit for Forest too.

Just be patient when the sticky patch comes. He always finds a way to get through it.
Thanks for taking the time to post this. Sounds like even more of a coup than I thought.

We get through plenty of player churn so as long as the incoming ones hit the mark, moving current ones shouldn't cause any issues.

I'm a bit frustrated with some of the comments on here, WTF do people want? Glasner is a bloody good manager some of you need to read @Tom W post. I have reservations myself but christ what do you think our club can justifiably expect in terms of a coach? We are lucky no bigger club scooped this fella up so we could move in

We need to get behind this guy, the club have gone all in on him by the looks of it, we need to do the same and give him time and support but no, much better to start the grumbling before he's even stood in the dugout, get behind our man FFS

The obvious thing that OG can point to, and EM has clearly latched on to, is the trophies. As the Palace fan has intimated, if Henderson gets sent off in the FA Cup Final, and Parish reads his emails, then Palace probably exit the Europa League at the QF or SF stage and Glasner leaves without any trophies. In short, he looks like a streaky/cup manager to me.
I hear it a lot but I don't understand how Henderson not getting sent off in that FA Cup final casts some kind shadow over Glasner as a manager?

Football games rightly or wrongly are often decided by luck, debatable decisions etc. The important thing is he got them to the final in the first place, even if luck did play a part in their victory

Are people suggesting Glasner's management directly lead to the tackle Henderson should have (rightly) been sent off for? We're just going to ignore everything else that got Palace to the FA Cup final and focus on what was probably a rush of blood to the goalkeeper's head?

Yes it was the wrong decision but Palace still beat City eleven vs eleven over ninety minutes that game which says far more about Glasner's management than one random incident in the game

I think this is what we all want and with OG, there's plenty to get behind, and i don't know about anyone else, but not smelling a rat with him.

But with Ange, and Dyche in particular, a lot of the fans weren't having them from day one (for many legitimate reasons). We as Forest fans, can smell bullshit a mile off, it's always been the case and those two were full of it, so the fans turned quick. Dyche is especially exposing himself with his comment in the media at the moment, christ.

Glasner is the real deal, his record speaks for itself, he's not one of those who lucked out at one club and overachieved, he's done it everywhere he's managed. He's also done it in this country, which is another box ticked. He's won trophies and that's what Marinakis wants.

The only word of caution is that it's likely we're going to shift to a new system which we're not set up for, so we might need August and September to get that and the new recruitments gelled, before we start flying!

Really looking forward to this era and where we go next. And annoying Steve Parish along the way :ROFLMAO:
I agree, he has done it everywhere & at every level - that’s the thing with Glasner.

I don’t think we will be wedded to 3 at the back though, people assumed the same with both VP & Nuno - I can totally see us playing a back 4, at least to start with.

But despite the media love-in, they often looked quite a poor/mediocre team for me, and for quite sustained periods too..
Because they are? The point is he has done an outstanding job with most of his decent players being sold and also at incredibly poor times - Guehi was going to be sold on deadline day, Eze late on. Mateta off to Milan. All of that with very little reinvestment.

we nearly crumbled with a squad for superior and we are turning our noses up at 10-12…we have been more or less 17th 3 out of 4 seasons

Play with 9 up top and maverick it to the domestic treble
Didn't know he played and think he might be a bit small to play up front but hey, if you think it's worth a shot

No it is an example as you said of the fickleness of football. One contentious incident goes his way and he's "a proven winner", yet if it goes the other way, it's fine margins and the butterfly effect means he probably leaves Palace without a trophy.

It's not a sleight on Glasner as a manager at all, just an attempt to try and put in perspective the rather simplistic view that he just wins trophies therefore he will do so here. Like I said, I am not taking his trophies away from him - he has the winner's medals and that's all that counts - but it does show the risk of going overboard just because of his trophy record when his league record is not as fantastic.

Who is turning their nose up at 10-12?

I was just explaining my thoughts on the appointment and the general reaction that this was an elite signing for us. I even said that I was happy with the appointment.

I'm not turning my nose up at anything. I haven't seen anyone on here do so either, so I'm not sure why people are saying anyone is unhappy with OG. There is plenty of grey area between "we are going to win everything" and "not good enough for Nottingham Forest".

By the same thought process, Cooper can throw his promotion in the bin because we got lucky in the final

You can imagine up any moment in every managers or players career which defines it, that is kind of the point - you need luck along the way.

I'm over the moon with Glasner, but I totally agree with staying grounded and realistic too.

We've taken a significant step up IMO, but I'm not expecting us to storm the league or even start collecting cup silverware like it's going out of fashion. For me, I just think we've now given ourselves a serious chance at some silverware over the next few years, and should hopefully be able to undertake that challenge without shitting our pants about relegation every week too.

And honestly, for me the real big thing here is Glasner's effect on our club culture. If we ever want to be a genuine top half side, we simply can't keep relying on the "pander to the players" mo. Because the second they mardy it all goes to plop. Glasner's MO will hopefully address that too.

But his league record is still not bad?

He walked Austrian football, went to Wolfsburg & qualified for Europe twice, went to Frankfurt & did the same with a European trophy thrown in - joined Palace halfway through a season with 25 points in 25 games & got 24 points in the final 13 games (for context - VP inherited a similar points total & got 15 points) - this was their highest ever points total. Then he gets 53 (another points record for Palace) & 45 points (whilst managing European football with 14 players by the way).

I am not expecting us to walk the league or it to be smooth sailing from minute one, but his record is pretty untouchable, even the league record. Put it this way, if he joined without the trophies, there would be less fanfare but I imagine most would still be happy with it. He's got the most out of every team he has managed, Palace was not a one off.

Closing down browser tabs and stumbled across the thread on the palace board about OG coming to us. Reloaded it and they’re currently up to 423 posts and still arguing today about whether we are a bigger club than them
423 posts of finding ways to say "Yes, Forest are and have always been a bigger club than Crystal Palace" is a quite staggering attainment but in an of itself probably also demonstrates a point because no doubt there are more posts on here about things like Squirrels and crisps than Crystal Palace.

Not got a problem with him (I think it's a good appointment and I hope he is successful) but this isn't true. Palace had 20 players start at least three games in Europe, plus others like Nketiah who played less. It was a tight squad but not that tight.
