I don't think anyone expected us to win, it was just our performance resembled Hughton's Championship team, (obviously against much stronger opposition) which is disappointing knowing how well we played last season. You then look at the team and think how many would have gotten into last season team despite spending £85m ish on it.

Early days though, so next week will be a true test of where we are.

I think it was a nervous performance, the occasion of the first PL game got to alot of them. Make no mistake Steve Cooper won't be happy we didn't play in our usual way and he will want a reaction and for us to learn from it like we did after that Bournemouth game

Has he singed yet?
I am surprised at the level headed reaction of many fans (not all, I'm looking at you Twitter...) - good to see that many are seeing past this game and understanding that we'll get better, while also puncturing any fancy ideas of anything other than survival being the number one aim!

There's a big difference facing a £350m squad in front of 50,000 than a cobbled together Championship side with 15,000/18,000 attending.

Hi Everyone,

I think there’s two sides to this, the first being your adaption to the EPL as well as blooding in new players, the pace and pressure on the ball seemed to have you stumped today and we just looked stronger tbh but ultimately your midfield was non-existent. It’s going to take a few games to get comfortable, Cooper just needs time.

The other side being that i suspect most people weren’t fully aware of the progress we’ve made under Howe. Our style of play, our direction and how well drilled we are...by no means the finished article but its improving every game. In addition to that we’ve got a very, very good record at home and with a couple of top quality signings cold be pushing the Top 8 in my opinion.

I thought Henderson looked solid and the new lad up front (9) mixed it up when he came on. I’m so glad that Johnson stayed at Forest, I'm looking forward to seeing him progress as a player and i think the education and experience he gets this year will set him up well.

Good luck for the season, not every day will end like today for you I'm sure of that 👍🏻

No Newcastle are not a top team, there are others better other than Abu Dhabi and Scouse. West Ham are a better team for one, Spurs certainly are. We are at home though next week. Whether we can bridge the gap in home games will give an idea whether survival is realistic or not.

I do think they’re a top team if you look at their results this calendar year - 4th in the whole league I believe

The reality is any points from away games at Newcastle, City, Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea,Spurs are a bonus.

Add to that we were always going to have a bad start having thrown a team together from scratch.

The Everton and West Ham games will give us a better idea, but it’s September where we’ll really see where we’re at.

Way, way too early to draw any conclusions at all

I’m disappointed that we didn’t give the Mags more of a game but we faced a team bought at much higher cost than ours that fed off the expectation before it rather than shrink from. That’s something I’m not too displeased about because now Cooper can say, “This is the standard, boys. What’s our response?” A wake-up jolt in the first game ain’t such a bad thing.

We’ll learn from this.

Today provided us with a little realism.

We have to do better. We have to work harder. We have to do more.

Cooper has a squad. Now, he has to turn that squad into a team.

We will play against better and worse than Newcastle but we had to start somewhere and with each performance Cooper will learn more and more about how we carve a credible position in this league.

This is not good news. We need fans going ballistic saying they're not going away again - then I might get a ticket 😉

Mangala I get, he's only been here a week. Awoniyi has had a full pre season with the squad.

If he's not good enough to turf Surridge out in the eyes of Cooper (regardless of number of new faces) then that worries me.
Yeah. I didn't watch any pre-season games, so I haven't actually seen Awoniyi play before. It just hadn't occurred to me that he wouldn't automatically be much better than Surridge.

Set pieces will need to improve as well. Without garner, the quality of delivery doesn't look to be there.

Only one game I know but that fucking corner routine was a little embarrassing.

The Geordies are a very good side, we’re gonna be sound lads, everyone go enjoy their weekend.
The problem we have is they are all very good sides, we would have lost to every team in the Premier with that level of ball retention, a total lack of quality and composure on the ball through the team. Lingard was especially wasteful of possession. Most teams have better strikers and would have put us to bed much sooner. We are even further off than I expected!

He is a very young inexperienced player, just can't expect too much too soon. We need a striker of PL quality for sure.

Some random thoughts as I head home:

Henderson looked good but great strike or poor keeping?

Williams promising.

Worrall and McKenna both solid, nothing else to report as usual.

Niakhate clearly has good attributes but he looked nervous, improved though.

Toffolo better than I feared defensively, worse than I hoped for offensively.

Colback he tries hard but he looks short of quality. Should have been substituted rather than LO'B.

O'Brien thought he was our best player, great energy, read the game well, carried it decently and nice passing.

Lingard you can see the runs he wants to make, we just need more of the ball and better quality on it. Should have sat better on Guimaraes with his role.

Surridge I'd feel far happier seeing him for 20 minutes against a tiring defence than 70 minutes trying to lead the line.

Johnson he needs to learn how to be involved in games where we are struggling for possession or being denied space, it's going to happen a lot this season.

Newcastle looked really solid, if Almiron had a right foot he'd be top draw. Guimaraes was on another level to anyone on the pitch. Touch toothless up front but you could see them top 6ish with a top striker and a better right sided midfielder.

Nothing to panic about with us, team is going to take a while to gel and that while comfortable for them there is some promise. I'm not sure we can afford two strikers for some of our tougher away fixtures. Too many long balls too.
