Nick Pope

Kind of thing where if the Mass of the fans had faith that he could be the answer to our prayers then maybe we'd resurrect his career in the top flight - must be purgatory for the good player like him but Brice has been a revelation and with Horvath and Smith, that trinity looks ok for now. Hope we learn the lesson of Burnley who committed the Cardinal sin of never rally strengthening their side at the right times. After all no-one has a divine right to stay in the PL.

Absolute nonsense. As much as I'd love the signing this is a non starter. Move on.

A pray that we don't waste £40m of our transfer budget on him. It could condemn us to the fiery pits of relegation for sure. After all, even he is probably unlikely to stop.the likes of Gabriel Jesus scoring against us. Hopefully the "journalist" reporting this is another false prophet, and will confess his sins about posting such bullshit shortly.

No puns from me, but if we sign Nick Pope (even at 10m), hold on to your hats, because big Vangelos is going to be dropping mega-dough this summer.

GK is not a position I would be prioritising, so a big purchase there surely means we are in for a huge summer in the market.

I reckon it’s paper talk though.

Not needed we've Brice and Ethan..

Massively overinflated price for a keeper who lets face it was relegated!.

If we have 10million to potentially spend on a keeper it’s gonna be a fun summer.

This will never happen but hopefully it shows we aren’t messing about.

Assume this is in jest.Pope is twice the keeper Samba and Horvath are. Probably better than both combined:D

Not happening anyway, firstly there's no way Pope would come to us and secondly there's no way we're dropping £10m on a keeper.

To be fair, if he was that good he wouldn't have been at Burnley all these years.

He's a decent bottom half Premier League keeper, but absolutely not worth breaking the bank for.

He isn't very good. As I've mentioned on other threads part of the reason why England seems to struggle for keepers is that most of the English ones in the PL play for struggling sides.

It's quite damning really - de Gea has been at Man U for ages, as has Lloris at Spurs, Arsenal have Ramsdale but seem to have settled on Leno too, Mendy is at Chelsea, Liverpool have Kelleher and Allison, City have Ederson, W Ham Fabianski, Leics have Schmeichel (though came through the English system, he isnt), Brighton Sanchez, Wolves Sa, Newcastle Dubravka, Palace Guaita, Brentford Raya, Villa Martinez, Southampton Forster, Everton Pickford, Leeds Meslier... and the others went down.

How many of them are English? In fairness to Arsenal they have played Aaron Ramsdale a fair amount but for the next highest finishing one you need to go right near the bottom. Pickford also got relegated with Sunderland and ended up at Everton because of it.

A good keeper doesn't save a side from relegation in a lot of cases because usually there are other issues too, like the defence allowing too many chances, or not scoring enough goals. But these are consistently registering lower midtable finishes and actually you'd expect a lower finishing keeper who actually looked good would get a chance at one of the higher clubs but this isn't happening to any of them really.

So Nick Pope is probably an upgrade on Brice Samba and Ethan Horvath, but:
- is the upgrade meaningful in terms of overall squad value
- are the players he's replacing good enough for the level we're at
- do other positions need strengthening first
- how much will he cost in terms of fee, or wages, and how will this fit in to our wage structure especially if we go down

Given they are relegated and no doubt on a high wage bill, I don't think Pope would cost us a large fee, but he will probably cost in terms of wages, and when we have a squad without the loan players (who we have to assume none are staying so far) we have Samba, who is one of the best CH goalkeepers and Horvath, who did well when he came in and is a US international, Jordan Smith isn't good enough but we know that and he's unlikely to be needed past the bench.

In balance with the squad we currently have no full backs (assuming Colback is primarily a MF) with Lowe and Spence going back, and with Bong's deal up, aside from a player who spent last season playing non-league, another who's not played for us and is on loan to Switzerland, and a young lad who needs loaning out. Up front we just have Surridge as Davis is on loan and Grabban's contract is up. Those are the positions which need strengthening first.

Genuine question are you a troll? (Not that you would say if you were!) You seem to have a negative angle on absolutely everything

I wouldn't get him because I believe in Samba but there is no disputing Pope's quality.

Burnley would have gone down years ago without Pope. He is England's best keeper by a long way in my opinion, only reason he's not involved is because he is not better with his feet than the others. And he is one of the best in the Prem too. The stats every year reflect that, he was higher rated in most metrics than Ederson last year.

I also think people are taking the fee too literally. It says in the article we would only be tempted if it was a good deal, I.E. below £10m. Like I said in other threads people have to get over the fees, they are not gonna be correct - just judge the player and whether he will improve us or not.

No, I'm not.

I'm also not sure why saying we won't drop £10m on a keeper makes me negative. Seems like realism to me...

Wasn't even talking about the price.

The comments about him not wanting to come here - makes no sense as he sits in the Championship.

And it was meant in general, posts on every other thread - you seem to look take the absolute worst view of every single scenario.

No disrespect to Pope, but I think Pope being one of the best English keepers says more about the how relatively poor the current crop of English goalkeepers are at the moment than anything else. His stats might also be a bit more inflated than the likes of Ederson and such because he generally has had much more to do than those other keepers.

I think he is a reasonable enough keeper and could do a job for a bottom half Premier League side, but I wouldn't say he's one of the best in the Premier League by a long shot personally. If he was he'd have left Burnley ages ago (like a few of Burnley's better players have done over the years) and wouldn't be currently linked to a newly promoted Premier League side such as ourselves.

I am not opposed to the idea of him signing per say, but I wouldn't want us to drop an eight figure fee on him. It would be a colossal waste of money if we did, as its incredibly unlikely he'd be the difference between us staying up or going down and would have little resale value going forwards.

Depends on price and wages dosen’t it? 40 mill is absurd and we won’t do that plus Pope is shocking with his feet.

However if we get him for 10 mill and on okay wages then it’s good business however that’s never going to happen.

I’d rather we try everything to secure Spence we have samba who can do a job for us.

Just say it as I see it and if I see someone posting something I disagree with I'll post and hopefully there can be some sort of discussion. Unfortunately if it doesn't fit with the general narrative then it's seen as trolling but i suppose thats not hugely surprisingwhen some posters on here have been posting years and probably know one another in the real world.

Certainly not my intention though, not quite sure what I'd gain from it to be fair. I was at Wembley last week going mad with everyone else so it would be an odd move to then come online and try and wind folk up.

Opinions of course, I think Pope definitely is one of the better keepers in the League. He is not just bottom half standard. He is just below that elite level for me.

You can count on one hand the mistakes he has made in the Prem over his 4 seasons and he is one of the best shot stoppers around.

But I do agree we should spend it elsewhere. Don't worry about the price, it's all speculation.
