I think Spence really needs to consider his options here and realise where he's liked.

He might not get that same feeling at Spurs. A few bad games at that high level and they'll be on his back whereas we will support him.
Tbh he seems a bright lad.

Ideally the right move is back here for us but money talks more than that.

This makes no sense to me.

Ok, so Boro want a decent price for their player, which is fair enough. But he doesn't want to stay with them, and they don't want him.

As it stands, the best options for him are us (where he spent last season on loan and fits in) or Spurs (perhaps less guarantee of first team football, but back in London, and at a higher level as you say).

We are wisely looking elsewhere, expecting Spurs to get him but, this doesn't appear any closer to happening.

Spurs (quite wisely) presumably don't want to pay too much for a player who has potential but maybe a questionable attitude (Warnock's comments) and who hasn't played in the PL yet. He's also not necessarily going to be a first team player for them.

We're also looking at other players such as Neco Williams who can do as good a job. I know both can play LWB and RWB but if we did get Williams would we also want Spence?

If the answer to that is no, then he could end up with neither Spurs nor Forest being able to sign him.

And if that's the case, also assuming no-one else does come in for him and get him, he's back at Boro playing 2nd fiddle to Izzy Jones having already won promotion from the same division.

It really is a massive gamble. If Spurs aren't willing to pay what Boro want they should drop it and let us get him tbh
I have said the same, Spurs have Levy negotiating this one and it appears that the fans are frustrated by the length of time its taking but there does seem an apathy in that if it doesn't happen then they will move on.

I've also seen some saying that he's not guaranteed to play much and others saying that they don't need him anyway.

The long and short for Spurs is that they have 2 international right backs already. If Conte is the master coach they claim then he can get a tune out of one of them at least.

Emerson Royal for example is apparently wanted by Athletico but all of these deals are really optional for them. It sounds like Boro have upped the asking price to £25m and there is no way Spurs will pay that, I'd be surprised if they would pay more than £15m.

I don't think there's anything I've seen out there to suggest boro have upped their asking price to 25m. That doesn't really make sense. It sounds like they set the price they wanted and that it's too high, even for spurs. If the going rate for Williams and cash is the 12 to 16m range, I think 15m is around the ballpark. If it drags on then boro will need to decide whether they want a player of that value on their bench or not.

I wonder who we are going to target for our other loan slot? I haven’t seen any names mentioned.

Statto makes good points. It is Boro’s prerogative to ask for whatever price they want. But when we have sold players in the past and got good prices (cash as a good example) they have been in our first team, we want to keep them and although the player probably did think a move would be nice wasn’t a total want away who has no intention of going back. It is also fairly well known Boro want to fund a squad revamp with the money they get from Djed.

So this is the reason I can see for clubs not wanting to pay his full worth, or at least haggling the fee.

I still think he could end up here, my only slight doubt is how motivated would Djed be to come back knowing he could have had the move to spurs? Will it dampen his enthusiasm or drive him in to prove them wrong.

I still think if you can get him for £15m and we can bring in an equivalent at lwb and a few different options we can avoid what happened later on last season (teams shutting down the right side) and we will have a more valuable player on our hands in a years time.

I don't know enough to have an opinion on whether Williams, Spence or Kabore is the better player so I'm happy to see where this goes and enjoy whoever we get. Sentimentally I'd prefer Spence, but that does look the least likely option.

I really thought his name was Nicko, must be a Welsh pronunciation, I suppose.

He's looked pretty good to me, hope we get him.

Like this kid. Part of me thinks he'd be a better fit than Spence in the EPL.

On Spence, little annoyed by the situation as, if the rumours are true that Boro' want £20m, Coops has put £15m on his valuation. Surely they could have priced that in when we bid(?)

I'm convinced Spurs are reluctant to pony-up the cash in one hit, at least not the chunk Boro' would want. Spurs are not as cash rich as they appear.

Boro need cash inbound, they’re flirting in FFP danger zone. I love Djed and massively appreciate his contribution to our rise but I’m glad that Forest are bending over to unrealistic valuations.

From a Boro perspective they could get £12-15m easily for a player they’d have probably taken £2-3m for this time last year which is a great return. And that is thanks to both the application the player put in, but also the opportunity afforded him by us.

I might be way off but it feels like ‘Boro were expecting a bidding war and it has fallen flat on its face. I think only Spurs and Forest were truly interested till Spence made it clear he his preference would be to go to Spurs. Now Spurs are playing hardball because ‘Boro, unless they want to keep Spence as a bench warmer next season, have no leg to stand on. Anything between £12-15m feels like a fair price for Spence in comparison to others, talk of £20m feels like ‘Boro trying their luck.

But on Neco, I don’t believe Nixon for a second, but I’d love to have him. Don’t think he has the physical traits of Spence, but he has looked a more refined player whenever I have seen him. I don’t think signing Williams absolutely rules out a move for Spence should ‘Boro look to sell later in the window though.

Yes I've given up on anything Nixon- he's looking for clicks like the rest- throw enough shit- some may stick tactics.
I think the bidding war for Spence didn't really kick off as MFC expected - but they do need to sell their best asset before the seasons starts. Forest turn thier attentions elsewhere for good reason

Of course, the other side of this is Spence and his reps wage demands. If they've been bedazzled by the hype generated towards the end of the season, they've probably priced him at £60-80kpw. Which would be ridiculous.

Williams is a better player than Spence.

But Spence suits our system more.

However there is no reason Cooper wouldn’t adapt it. Both are really talented players at the end of the day.

It’s a tough life being in the Prem.
Yeah happy with either, but would be hugely disappointed if we landed on our 3rd choice. Both Spence and Williams are built to be prem players. I do think Williams is more well rounded though and actually more consistent going forward

Perhaps we should stick a low ball offer in for Jones at Boro instead?
