Apropos of nothing, I think we'll stay in this right to the end of the transfer window if we don't get him before.

I suspect the club sees his value as a convex curve. You could put a lot of money down and in 2/3 years either lose 25% of his value or double it and more.

That's the basics of it. His future potential is considered that he could become the best English midfielder. Not one of the best, but the best.

I suspect the question the club has to ask, do we have the coaches and the philosophy to enable that?

I don't know if we'll get him. That looks like it's down to Wolves. They share the vision of his potential.

Their gambit is similar - keep him and get him to sign a new deal that could double over what Forest are offering or see him walk away in two seasons.

Forest's risk is less, we're guaranteed some resale value. That's why we'll stay in on this.
There are far too many superlatives being thrown around and we need a bit of perspective. To talk of this kid as having the potential to "the best" English midfielder is, quite frankly ridiculous at this point. Pinch yourself think through the top Prem sides and remember how many good players there are out there and then remember hes had NO sustained time in the Prem or any other top league. I mean anyone of our U13 kids might turn out to be the best player in England-f*** it why stop there, the world but the proof of the pudding is doing it.
I've no doubt I will get pelters for this and will be called negative but I see plenty of ground to be travelled for MGW before we even know his best position in the top devision let alone know exactly how good he will be.
I'd stay in there but I wouldn't go a penny over our valuation.

But people have talked about him that way. Whether you agree with it or not doesn't matter. The point I was making is his value from Wolves, almost certainly from Forest, and maybe from other clubs like Everton think it. They might be wrong, but that's why his value seems high.

He must be seen as one for the future, because sure as heck, we have quality at the moment with those we've already bought.

Couple of things to say about that - the 'best' comment is in relation to the progress he is making at the position/age range he is in. Connor Gallagher might have something to say, but they could play together. I think it's fair given his trajectory with the England Under-xx setups.

Agree though that we dont know his best position, though I'd counter knowing the player that Cooper does.

Also agree we should stick to our valuation, and assume that we very much will. I think the signing is less make or break than others, it's more a case of, like BJ and JG, we'd rather see how far we can take his potential with us, under a manager who will know him as well as any other given their work together.

Ultimately I hope we get him, cos Coops wants him and I think he's going places. My only concern really is that he will need time to develop like all young players, and a large fee might make fans twitchy in terms of the timescale needed.

Doesn't seem to be pulling up any trees at Wolves at the moment, and they've made a pretty poor start to the season. Wonder if they might have second thoughts about our offer...

Yep, you’d have thought a lad on course to be the best midfielder England have ever produced would be running the show a bit more.
I think there’s too much pressure on this lad and I’d leave him be for a year at least…

Or at least until January. Early days still, but if he and Wolves continue in this vein then his value will plummet; we could then bring him here for a lower fee and Cooper can work his magic to get him firing again.

Get him for around 20m in Jan if Wolves are having a mare and Forest still want him. Imagine refusing 42m for him, Wolves might be regretting that already.

I like that thinking. I also think it would be nice for us to be "gambling" on a few to develop in the sense we aren't paying top dollar at the outset and if it then works out we maximise profit. Truth is that with the latest rush of signings we are fairly well covered in most departments and as such MGW isn't essential anymore. I'd play "chicken" with Wolves now even if theres a chance that that looses us the player...

£20m? He's only worth £9.90m. He must be, as that's his value on Transfermkt and so many fans quote their prices so it must be right. :devilish:

If the Aouar signing happens, I'd say we'll walk away from Morgan in this period and see what the landscape looks like in 12 months. A bit like Jimmy Garner, we've been filling needs whilst we've waited. Unlike Jimmy Garner, the price seems far too high now given what else we've done.

Most of the big hitters seem to have enquired about this guy, so it'll be some achievement to get him to agree to join, especially if he's watched match of the day.

Terms still not agreed. Sounding like Wolves have set the bar - with bigger clubs now likely to move in.

Edit: Terms agreed according to Romano. As you were 🤦‍♂️

He looks like a serious player. Too good for Wolves, surely!?
I'm sure other clubs are saying they same thing about us and Aouar (and before him Lingard).

Again, I think the ship has sailed with mgw, if we land aouar, the signings we have made have shown that whatever talent mgw has, wolves have priced him out of a move and the only way he’s coming here is next season in a hope to resurrect his career!
we have signed players with proven ability, ok not prem proven but still, for fractions of the amount wolves wanted and I think we have ended up with an amazing squad due to this.. so thanks wolves!

Yeah it looks like for the upfront cost of Gibbs White we can add Aouar, and Maupay.

Both scenarios seem great on paper to me, so I don’t think Id state one is better than the other. Just happy that despite walking away from our summer long priority we not only pivoted to a revised plan, but one that is equally exciting and well thought through.

I feel Wolves have tried to drag this on and make it a deadline day game of chicken to see who blinks first.

Didn't bank on us finding other targets and getting them, they will probably end up banging on the door at 10pm asking for 10 million before the window slams shut
