I agree, big fan of MGW and think he's got bags of potential but £40m is just ridiculous. I'd much prefer we use that money to push for Garner + a big troublesome #9

We've been shrewd with our signings all summer, spunking £40m on MGW seems strangely out of character compared to the rest of our business

Part of me wonders if EM is pushing this one so hard because he knows its the man Cooper wants most, and he did promise to back him with whatever he needs to succeed. After all the reason Cooper left Swansea was because he wasn't being backed financially to achieve his vision
If that’s the case-Cooper is putting his balls right on the chopping block.

I agree,

£40m is an awful of money just to show you are backing your man.

It seems insane to me for an unproven talent.

Especially when you think what we could do with it if we could invest it across the team.

I'd love MGW here, but at £40m and wages? :cautious:😟

40 million is insane. He’s a great player but spending that amount of money on an unproven prem player is idiotic.
Plus, isn’t he normally out for long periods with injuries every season?

I love Cooper I really do but if the sticking point to him signing a new deal is spending 40 million quid on a lad who is probably worth half of that I’d be asking questions if I was EM.
I don't know how this narrative that Cooper will only sign his new contract if Gibbs-White signs has come up, but I am sure it is not true. In fact, it would be a cause for real concern for me if I were the owner. It's simply a case of an owner trying to give the manager who was succesful beyond all expectations the tools he asked. Trying too hard and spending too much perhaps, but it is what it is. I am certain that the deal is irrelevant to Cooper's contract.

Whatever we may feel about it, if Cooper, Murphy and Marinakis are all in full agreement that it’s worth £40m or whatever it is they’re prepared to pay to bring this player in then we should just relax and go with it. If it was down to just one of them then sure, ask serious questions, but with the three of them colluding on this I’m more than reassured it’s the right decision.

I’m not even sure where Gibbs-White fits in the team, is he to replace Johnson/Lingard? That sort of money should be on a proven striker

Apart from anything it would be absolutely stupid to strap your career and earnings as a manager to a young unproven player. It would be off the scale unprofessional and clearly there is not a chance its true.

For me it's not about the fee, rather we simply need someone else in midfield with Premier League experience.

However good Morgan is he just doesn't have it. So it's a no in favour of someone else with said calibre for me, and yes we will probably have to pay more.

Like every Summer, well actually it's a perennial issue, some one speculates as to why some thing doesn't happen - Cooper's signature, in this case - and somehow, it morphs into a gold-plated truth that becomes it's own yardstick by which other things are measured.

This forum, and others, have had them forever.

We need a whole bench, look at ours yesterday it was shit, Mighten, Cafu, Taylor, Hammond should be Nowhere near the 18.

We will still be spending money, even after Moreno and MGW.

This is getting silly now, if true. £30m was difficult to swallow, £40m is insanity and we will have had our pants well and truly pulled down if we pay that.
Why am I getting the impression that Cooper signing his contract is hinging purely on this signing.

Well I don't know about that. We get even just an experienced PL head in like Kouyaté in and we'll be so much the better side.

Cooper definitely isn't the type of character to play those games, not a chance he's dictating specific transfers using his contract situation

As far as I know he's quite hands off with a lot of our recruitment process in general and prefers to trust the team behind the scenes to bring in the type of player he requires while he focuses on his coaching duties

I do however think it's possible that EM is going to the very extreme to show his support for Cooper by getting him the one man he knows he wants, he did give him his word that he'd back him with whatever he needs so perhaps feels personally invested in pulling this one off for Cooper. As nice as it is to have this level of backing it does seem to be bordering on the stupid side, just hope it isn't a move emotionally motivated by EM

He’s only 5’10 too, untill we sign a big bastard for the midfield I’m going to continue with my moaning.

I should probably go support Milwall as I’m sure they exclusively sign big bastards, or at least the second part.

Or we stop hitting it long, don't need a big bastard if you play it on the floor.

…literally played in the premier league yesterday
Fair point-but he’s played nearly all of his senior football in the 2nd tier.
I’d personally invest the invest the rest of our transfer budget elsewhere-a decent striker or two would be
a good start.

Think everyone needs to chill out a bit and not believe everything on Twitter.

Lingard - wages will be 180k or 200k on a 5 year deal we are putting the club stability at risk …actual wage 80k on a 1 year deal

Moreno - they want 20m! It’s mental. Move on…actual fee 9m

Moral of the story, we don’t get the details. Everything gets over inflated. It’s not your money, if the very talented recruitment and finance team deem we can afford whatever fee for MGW and he fits the requirements we need then do it.

Saying just spend that 40m on 2 other players is just rubbish
