I think it's a difficult one for them tbh. To have two players from the same team go off with concussion is a rare occurrence. I think the rule is there to prevent teams pulling a fast one. There's absolutely no doubt if it was unlimited we'd see teams having their players dropping and claiming concussion to get additional subs on.
I'd like to think that a team / player "pulling a fast one" with medical issues that can be seriously damaging for a player including potentially life-threatening would - if found out - be punished, probably with a several-match ban for the player plus points deductions.

We see concussion subs often enough to know that the kind of collision which happens especially in a crowded penalty area at a corner can happen in quite a few matches and there's the chance of it happening more than once in a match. Quite feasible also two players from the same team could be involved with/without additional players in the same incident.

There's not only the possibility of two separate incidents in the same match (which happened yesterday, and there was the incident a while back where Chelsea had two keepers knocked out in the same match) but also a reasonably high chance a concussion could happen after a team has used all its subs, and realistically there can't be the opportunity to mess around with things, if there's suspected concussion or a head injury there should be no bars to replacing that player. I'd perhaps also say maybe as far as if a player has to go off with what's clearly a serious injury that shouldn't count either, thinking maybe ACLs or broken legs or something which isn't in as much doubt, or the match officials include a neutral physio as well who can decide without there being any thought of influence.

We were forced to change 2 players yesterday because of head injuries and only got one extra sub, it was the same for both teams, admittedly, but we lost a change because the sub of MGW and their keeper had to come out of the standard 5. Imagine if there had been another Derry/Abbott style clash after all the subs had been used, both would have had to play with 10, which affects the integrity of the game. And there was the time Sels had a bit of treatment and shortly after we subbed another player, did they realise that was the last change as Sels would have either had to carry on if it was a bad injury or we'd have to put another player in goal. We can't also have the situation where a player is pressed (directly or otherwise, such as the implications being the team are a player short) to continue despite a head injury. Zach got up after that one which was better than Derry ended up but, just seeing his face on camera there was no way he was able to continue. When we've had kids getting concussions playing rugby, carrying on, making the condition worse and then sadly dying, then it's clear we need strong protections around it.

Any player who is concussed or potentially concussed should be replaced outside the usual changes a side is allowed. Anything else is utterly ridiculous when lives are at risk.

Would be amazed if he is not starting. He is on great form, he needs high profile games like this to force his way into the England squad. To be honest, before Christmas I did not think he had a chance. However, he is on fire, and it would be insane not to take him when he is playing like this.

There is so much support for him going by so many professionals that if England do poorly and he did not go then he will be used as a very big stick to beat TT.

You have to ask at the moment how many Chelsea fans would swap Palmer for MWG and I bit it would be most of them

To be clear, we didn't make a concussion sub yesterday, Chelsea did (Derry). We replaced Abbott, but my guess is that he was coming off for Neco at half time anyway so they just brought it forward after the collision because it was so violent and wanted to take precautions.

Because Chelsea made an official concussion sub we also got given a sixth substitution, but none of ours were officially made as an extra concussion substitution, hence both Abbott and MGW hopefully being available on Thursday.

I didn’t realise this. I thought we had, only because it said it on the radio.

Despite neither being concussion subs, does anyone really expect to see MGW start on Thursdy night?
Given the antics by Emry and the response of the Villa fans to them, plus the madman rant after the first leg by the nutter, I suspect Thursday evening could be a feisty affair from the off, with Villa trying to intimidate the ref by diving and calling foul for every challenge, and to intimidate forest players by surreptiious use of the elbow and leaving a foot in on the tackle.
MGW would want to give his usual 100%, and I could foresee him doing even more damage to his stiched face.

I expect, if he plays any part, he'll be wearing some sort of protective mask.

MGW has an incredibly tough constitution. It wouldn't surprise me if he played. Would love to see Anderson in the 10 role if not.

I'd be very surprised if Abbott wasn't concussed after that clash with Derry. He wasn't as bad because he got up but he didn't look good.

He'll be out for Villa as well as Newcastle on Sunday as they need 24 hours total rest then 48 hours without anything remotely taxing then go through the staged return which can be several days between stages.

Part of this argument about players and heading / dementia is that actually any bangs to the head are bad and if you don't allow long enough to recover the damage is going to be lasting even if its just low level impacts but over a sustained period.

We have no idea if or how long he was out for after that collision or what scans he will have had to decide what the next stage is. Anything like that is basically brain damage although not on the same level as something serious but the theory is it doesn't fully recover anyway

You reckon this is all mind games and MGw had one of them blood capsules you can get and just burst it when Sanchez came close?

That would really f*** with Emres head.

He definitely had the look of a concussed man when he came over to the bench. Proper glazed eyes.
That's what I thought, he looked conscious but he wasn't really focussing on anything, pretty dazed

No fit right backs in the Europa squad now that Aina, Savona and Abbott all out. I guess Cunha will deputise out wide which wont be his comfort zone.

Tomato sauce sachet down his shin pads. Vitor Pereira smuggles them out of Wetherspoons all the time for when he’s staying away.

He has a sandwich bag full of condiments
Vinegar in the eyes, pepper up their nose. It's a full on seasoning attack!

I don’t see evidence that the first concussion sub protocol is abused so unlikely that allowing more would.
Also not that much of an advantage as the opposition also get an extra sub.

If a player goes off for a concussion sub, the player going off enters the concussion protocol and is unable to playe for 6 days.
That is quite a good rule to deter teams from faking concussion injuries.
