Maradona, New Argentina Coach?

Nick.

Jack Armstrong
Argentina legend Diego Maradona could be set for a sensational return to football after claiming he has been offered the role of national coach.

Has he even got coaching badges ?
Pies at half time I guess lol

I can only see that ending in utter disaster for the Argentinian national team, which, I'm sure we all agree, is a jolly good thing!

he'll probably be a massive success. he's absolutely idolised in argentina, including by the current players, and i imagine he'll have the same effect that klinsmann had at germany. dare i say it's not that hard to manage a team with messi, riquelme, tevez, aguero etc.

I have about as much time for Maradona as I have for Gascoigne - i.e. none.

The sooner the fawning media stop referring to THAT goal as "the hand of god" and call it what it is - filthy cheating - the better for all.

I thought he was dead anyway?

ur, but maradona was the best player ever to grace a football pitch.

filthy cheating or whatever the ref should have spotted it. it's a shame that incident has tarred his reputation so much in britain that we're pretty much the only nation on earth apart from brazil who thinks that pele was remotely close.

cheated us out of maybe another world cup!!! Fuc*ing filth, cheating, drug taking dwarf,

but i do agree that he was the best ever player that has grace the pitch.

He is one of my favourite players of all time along with Gazza, cantona, pearce,

..in the same way perhaps that Harold Shipman was also quite a good doctor...

that's a rubbish analogy. by the same logic you could say every doctor is trying to kill their patients.

character flaws don't take away from utter genius. same goes for cantona, george best, zidane and countless other football geniuses. in fact these achilles heels enhances the legend. pearce would be nothing without the penalty misses, beckham would be nothing without the flicking leg, zidane immortalised himself with the headbutt.

Rubbish analogy? Do what? Your saying that 'despite the cheating, he's a great player' is no different to saying that 'apart from the genocide, Hitler was a great leader of men'. Whilst my example is a little more extreme (precisely how you highlight something - push it to a limit), it is valid.

"Apart from [insert dreadful failing], [name] was a [insert great characteristic]"

Maradona may or may not have been a great player. He is best remembered for being a cheat. A great man would have admitted it.

Throwing Pearce into your argument is a classic red herring. Pearce's penalty was SAVED. Waddle missed his. Does this make Waddle a legend in your eyes? His genius enhanced by his Achilles Heel? I wonder?

Phooey

The 'flawed genius' card usually gets played when it's about someone who hasn't lived up to their potential, Maradona did live up to his (with the help of cortisone injections).

He still didn't lift as many World Cup's as Pele though...

ur, waddle is a legend. because of the sausage factory thing, playing for marseille, that goal in the fa cup for bradford, the fast show and, of course, http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1KEMMfV5-Qg

oo er, three replies in a row, but i wasnt just talking about 1990 with pearce, im talking about the one he didnt miss and the celebration afterwards, and the last minute of his last game in professional football where he missed a penalty too. they all add up.
