Leaving the City Ground

I'm a Sunderland fan and I'm doing research on Roker Park

I'm interested, would you prefer to stay at the City Ground or move to a state of the art stadium?

If it was possible to redevelop Roker, most fans would have preferred to stay, even though our ground is a nice stadium

Good luck on your return to the Premier League

we're just about to have £100m stand built to replace our main stand built 1968.

Everyone, almost, wants to stay at the City Ground.

I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Stay, 100%.

I’ve done a few old and new grounds now and new rarely lives up to the old for atmosphere - including the Stadium of Light vs Roker Park.

The only consideration I’d have of moving location would be if the Eastside wasteland could be repurposed for a football ground, and it wasn’t just another identikit bowl. Both seem unlikely, so I’d rather stick with what we have and develop incrementally.

Would rather stay where they are to be honest.

An iconic location, and the area can be developed with a bit of commitment.

Yeah pretty much this. The location would have to be right to move and I think that would have been good for many reasons. I think if that all came to fruition and was a really exceptional, unique stadium I would go for that as I think that would push us to the next level.

However it isn’t going to happen so really pleased to be staying put. Hopefully a sustained stay in the premier league means we can gradually upgrade the stadium stand by stand.

One of the best walks to a ground at any time of the year anywhere in this country, start of the season the sun glistening off the river, a cold Tuesday night in December seeing the lights guiding you into mecca like a moth to a flame. Its one of the things that the sky sportsisim of football can never take away from a Forest fan. Move? Never.

Stadium of light ain't a bad ground, it ain't no Roker but it certainly ain't an identikit like Reading, Derby Leicester etc... I turned on the charity shield yesterday mid game and couldn't pick the ground like I could Goodison, old Trafford etc

Stay where we are. But would love to create more space around the outside, improve facilities in and around the ground and build it up a bit more capacity wise.

Yeah needs a bit of thought and a total revamp outside. Back of bc looks like some dirty old 70’s factory!!

The significant other and I was discussing this yesterday, as I was complaining about my backache on the walk from the station to Meadow Lane.

I used to think nothing of catching a bus to meet my friend by the toilets in Market Square, then walking down through Broad Marsh, past the station, through the Meadows and across the Trent. Then do it all back again after the game.

I said having a stadium plonked in the middle of a humongous car park might be easier on my weary bones, but it just wouldn’t be the same as sitting in the same stand I stood at the front of 46 years ago. No history, no soul.

My dad is massive Sunderland fan just thought you maybe interested to hear he actually loves the stadium of light now and the free park and ride system is very good. I’ve been loads to the stadium of light and it’s an excellent atmosphere however to bring it back to your point aesthetically the stadium of light is as dull as dishwater. That’s my fear with a new stadium because I get goosebumps when I walk over Trang bridge and see Trent end stand with the massive Forest badge on it. It’s also situated not only aesthetically perfectly but it’s setting is so historic and forms a sports area in Nottingham that we should be proud of and shows our love of sport in general.

Definitely. The City Ground is in the perfect location but the surroundings need a lot of work. Ideally they would also do something with the vacant plot of land on the corner of Pavillion Road and Radcliffe Road too.

Stay at the City Ground 100% every time.

And if it burnt down and we were forced to move, I would hope we would name our new stadium after something related to Nottingham or Forest (or sell the naming rights), not just borrow someone else's. Benfica's is the real Stadium of Light. Got to start your own traditions at a new place.

I don't disagree with you at all, the name went down terribly at the time but 25 years since we moved, it's accepted but there's no emotional affinity to the name.

At the time, there was a clamour for Wearside Park, the new Roker or the Wearmouth Stadium. The ground is built on what was the Wearmouth pit.

There was a BBC fly on the wall documentary in the 96/97 season you can watch on YouTube, called "Premier passions". It's like the Netflix Sunderland till I die series. When the stadium name was announced at midnight, there were fans waiting outside giving the chief executive grief about it!!!

Agreed, there isn't the emotional attachment to your modern stadium's compared to a City Ground, Villa Park, Elland Road, Molineux etc

Fans of a certain age probably still wish we were at Roker Park but we simply had to move. The ground was penned in by terraced housing so it was impossible to redevelop

Had we stayed there, with all seater stadium's being mandatory, the capacity would be 14,000

Like many of the older grounds. Everton was a classic case, completely hemmed in, no space to move at all, hardly room to park a few car as well.

The location is perfect, easy access from the city, good transport for away fans with only a short walk, just outside the City for pre/post match drinks.

The only issue is should we ever need to expand again we will be very limited as to what we can do.

100% stay

Echo everything here. There's probably a comparison with Fulham in terms of scenic views over the river.

Football clubs are part of the social fabric of a town. It's fine moving to a purpose built out of town but if done correctly.

Now I'll say it worked for derby in so much their shit hole bowl boosted their commercials that enabled them f*** with their finances. But character? Really? Naaa. It suffers from an underwhelming view in the middle of retail. The only thing those webbed feet can get tingly about is the f***ing walk home.
