He’s a football commentator on various TV channels (in my view, much better and less obsequious towards the rich big-city teams and glamour players than most) and, of relevance here, an occasional guest on the Forest Focus podcast, who is pretty well-informed about Forest for a non-fan.

It was never gonna happen for Forest as by all accounts we’re not interested in a midfielder - as things stand we are so far behind lots of other teams in that area

I've never been convinced with our overall midfield this year. I think Schlager will still be a really good signing but I felt we needed another and to move one out.
Let's face it, the season we finished 7th we caught lightning in a bottle. The midfield is almost the same that we've had the last few season and had obviously been weakened overall with the loss of Ando. We're just repeating the same things and expecting different outcomes.
I really hope we're in for another midfielder as well as the other obvious wing back positions.

Spot on. We got lucky with Anderson coming good and Chris woods chance conversion was better than Ronaldo and Messi for one season - that’s not likely to ever happen again. The problem is with our recruitment department as EM does back managers but we never seem to have a coherent plan. If I was the ‘club, I’d be spending money to recruit in that area in September to prepare for future windows

I think the problem with this one was Liverpool and a few others have been sniffing all summer so as expected he was going to wait for them

I was referring to the recruitment and lack of planning
But even though he was waiting for Liverpool we should have signed him in July so Liverpool wouldn't have been able to sign him.

What to people honestly expect? I'm pretty sure when the season ended we all thought our midfield was pretty much fine even with the expected departure of Anderson and the way we played under VP. The issue with Forest is that we simply don't have a plan, as we continue to fire and hire managers that are completely different in their style of play. Nuno different to Ange, Ange different to Dyche, Dyche different to VP, VP different to Glasner! How are on earth can there be any continuity with that?
WE should have signed him in March so WE couldn’t sign him in July…this is chess not chequers!

There can't. So we have to be content with catching lightning in a bottle very occasionally while far smaller clubs who are infinitely better run punch consistently above their weight. We have wasted the position we were in last summer and are now behind clubs who only got promoted a year ago.
Until EM moves out that's the way it will be. Look at how his number one club is competing in Greece these days. He can't keep up with better run organisations.
I think it's actually his ambition that holds us back.
He wants success for Forest - Unfortunately he wants it now and not in a few years because of a structured and well run operation.

I am starting to come to the conclusion that we have collected a set of midfielders that are all good footballers, tidy, work hard, but without Anderson it all looks a bit samey. We might be better off with a few that have standout features and some flaws rather than just a group of decent players. I know you rate Dominguez Notch, and so do I, but he's probably quite good at lots of things rather than exceptional at any. Schlager looks cut from the same cloth to me.

I don't really disagree with any of that tbh mate. I rate Dominguez so highly because he's very, tidy, an intelligent player, does a lot of underappreciated stuff and very rarely lets you down. Your point is very valid overall and currently Sangare is the only one that really has a standout skillset which is his ability to take the ball in tight and difficult areas under pressure.
I do really like what I've seen of Schlager in pre-seaon and he seemed to posses a couple of those extra traits, the question now is can he deliver it in the PL. We do need another CM and unfortunately that is going to moving either Dom or Yates out.
