Jorge Grant

No, I'm leaving cost completely aside - and I wouldn't consider Jorge a lightweight player anymore (although he certainly was when he left us).
What I see with him, is a player who has worked hard on the obvious flaws in his game - building up physical strength to allow him to impose himself on games and working on the defensive side of his game to compliment his more natural creativity.
He now plays in what would effectively be one of the two 'holding midfield' roles for us - albeit in Peterborough's 3-5-2 system - which does have two clear holding midfielders and a more advanced role, the advanced role usually being filled by Sammy Smodicz.
I don't - up to this point - seen anything in Joao to suggest he would work on his game to the same degree.
It would probably be a fairer comparison to put Jorge up against James Garner if we want a comparison to the current Forest team.

Interesting - maybe not a like for like comparison with Joao right now then, even in terms of role in the team. Maybe you'd see him playing in that deeper role, or at least as a central midfielder rather than number 10, if he ever played again for Forest then (not that that's a likely thing to happen)?

I think he now has the skillset where we could play him as an 8 or a 10, as the situation requires. I expect Posh to use him the same going forwards.

Now, you are pre-supposing that all his improvement is down to the player, not the coaches at his clubs.

How do you know this?

Is that at me?

I’ve not pre-supposed anything, but… if a player wants to improve they are at least part if the equation. If a player is not open to being coached, then the best coaches in the world won’t improve him. Also if a player has a desire to improve, they can train themselves.

Been told he can leave Peterborough, after falling out of favour.

Seems like letting him go wasn't quite the mistake some thought.

He was crossed off the hindsight list earlier this season along with Tyler Walker, given how neither really did much at this level.

Sad ins't it, but it just shows how easily the trap door opens in professional sport-hence my anxiety for Alex Mighten....

And also i would add that for some players (and I am looking in the mirror here) no amount of coaching, nor desire on the part of the player can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
My old grannie would say, as she sucked on a corn-cob pipe while lighting it with a glowing ember from the fire, "Face it lad, you are crap at football, but you love playing, just don't expect to make your living at it".
She was old and very wise.

P.S.: despite being number blind, and lacking in logical thought, I still made a living as a totally crap accountant - perhaps i should have stuck with the footie afterall.

Never really got the calls for Jorge Grant to be honest. Always looked a bit lightweight and didn't give you enough creativity in lieu of that.

And that was five years ago when 4-2-3-1 possession play was the rage. The game has moved on since, with players needing even more physicality/stamina etc and the #10 position role changing someone from a roaming playmaker to a box to box midfielder. So yeah, can see why he's out of favour at Posh.

Twines 22, Grant was 27. One is at their peak the other still improving.

Also they're arbitrary stats, how did they both get their goals, what were the assists.

What's the player like when not getting goals and assists, breaking down a footballers ability into purely goals and assists is imo pointless.

Pretty sure about 12 of Grant's goals were from penalties as well.

For me he has never passed the eye test.

As Gamble says you have to have more to your game.

Decent League One player, but I don't think he's Championship quality.

I think there are some players like that, that are very good at their level but very poor one league above. I always thought that about Darren Huckerby: seemed a level above in the Championship but not even average in the Prem. Same with Grabban. Excellent in the Championship but the flaws in his game (e.g. the slight hesitancy to shoot first time and take an extra touch, or not striking the ball hard enough) are completely exposed at a higher level.

Of course that's the case but judging that must be really hard and I always admire coaches that are able to get that judgement right.
In Grabbans case I think hes key "missing" attribute is lack of genuine pace-at the top level you have to have something that's special- hes clearly not a hold up the ball type of number 9 and his game would be taken to the next leave if he were proper quick. Hes not slow of course but he doesn't have the gas to really worry decent top level defenders and hence the Championship career.

... but he does have an innate instinct when he is in the 6-yard box.
He drops a shoulder, shimmies, and gets free and bang... goal.
Trouble is he spends to much time playing from deep or wide.
He's done well for us last few seasons, but I think his star is setting and he should be granted a place on a ship bound for the Grey Havens.

Just been sent off in the Europa League play off, after receiving a 2nd yellow for diving. Brereton (-Diaz) would have been proud of that one.
