Shearstone
Derby delenda est
I found it sad reading today that MON didn't get chance to see him before the end
a gentleman will walk but never run
imagine...we were newly promoted and it was our first game at one of the big London teams..
they came running at us like the charge of the light brigade....oh no, a 6 0 on the cards, but we managed to. block it and someone passed it out to robbo
in lots of space and a couple of. our players were moving up front and we wanted him to kick the ball. up front.....
and he stopped and looked about a bit.
the opposing fans started shouting fatty....
and he eventually started meandering down the pitch very slowly.
he went past three men, equally slowly, leaving 2 lying on the ground
...
he'd either somehow get past them by simply walking...and I mean. walking...round them or, if pushed, he'd. slip. the ball very slowly through their legs and walk around them and collect it.
. then he whipped. in one of the fastest and most accurate passes or crosses id ever seen.
can't remember if we scored or if we won, but we should. have. because. he skinned them alive.
and that's how it continued....it was great fun because it was utter humiliation for the opposition, but it was also gut wrenching, because you had the feeling that surely it couldn't work again ....he was our bash st kid against the aristocrats.
of course, it took b Clough to even think of playing him in that position, but he was truly incomparable there....ive never seen anyone play with that particular style
I was talking to the widow of a. former premier league player and she said the tributes. posted on their forum helped, so I hope these do.
I subscribe online to the most serious of German political magazines, and they usually only report on sport if there's an international scandal or to pay tribute if there's a death like pele or beckenbauer.....b also comes under scandal of course.
they also have this system where you can read some articles for. free,, but you have to pay for what they consider their more significant articles.
there was a great tribute to John but you had to pay. to read it....guess that sums it up.
thanks John
That's a nice anecdote, but I personally find it a bit of a stretch to hear Robbo's gutteral Lanarkshire accent as a "soft Scottish brogue".This is a lovely Eulogy by a Forest fan (and I too, aged 10, shared the need to be Robbo dribbling down the wings). I liked this story...
"......It was a gruelling pre-season, and Cloughie, in one of his legendary motivational speeches, was lecturing the team on diet, physique, and professionalism. He paced the room, then suddenly pointed a finger directly at John, who was relaxing with his famously un-rigorous approach to gym work. “Look at him!” Clough bellowed. “Robertson! Does that look like the physique of an athlete? Does it?!”
The room froze. They all stared at the floor. John just looked up, gave a little shrug, and in that soft Scottish brogue, replied, “Aye, gaffer, maybe not. But you should see the other guy.” The tension shattered. "
