Looks an odd choice, but it did make me ponder on what people must have thought when Cloughie signed a carpet fitter from Long Eaton.

I bet that raised some eyebrows back in the day.
To be fair,Birtles was truly awful on his debut against Hull in 1977.
It’s reported Clough said to Taylor after the game-‘never do that to me again’!

He played central midfield IIRC.
Indeed he did (still awful though).
The emergence of Birtles as a top striker is interesting for me.Having sold Peter Withe (too early in my
opinion) ,as you probably remember Otis,Clough and Taylor plunged Steve Elliott into the fray-when he
didn’t look up to it Birtles made his first appearance up front the weekend before the Liverpool 1st leg
European Cup tie.
The rest as they say is history.
Genius or just good old fashioned luck ?
Judge for yourself but I know what I think.

Definitely sold Wythe too early. Could have easily got a season or more out of him.

Withe subsequently had a great time at Aston Villa (via Newcastle)-it’s just as well Birtles came good.
I think Brian Clough later admitted Withe left too early (although I believe it was Taylor who wanted to sell
him).

Didn't Withe win the European cup with Villa? (just looked - he scored the goal - so he won the european cup for Villa, not just with(e) them).

Yes. I remember as a very young kid thinking Withe was what turned a decent team into a very good, winning team. We won the league with him and we were never quite as good without him.

Yes-I reckon the 77/78 Championship side was the best team we ever had-slightly ahead of the 78/79
European Cup winning side (although most of the players were obviously the same).

We should sign him and loan him out to a struggling Burton Albion side, just so we can have the headline 'Jizz Hornkamp revives the Brewers' droop'.

The main issue would have to be substitutions, I'm sure associating Jizz with Doggy Day care will see extra focus from the RSPCA which neither side would welcome!

Tails, on the Atheltic Talk-in, agrees this target looks a bit odd and it raised eyebrows in te Netherlands.

But the recruitment team have certainly targetted him for whatever reason, and they're due the benefit of the doubt.

Still thinks Jizz is an active target.

But also accepts, on the face of it, could be a dud.

So you’re saying, Forest could be…

…firing blanks when it comes to Jizz?

I don't believe for one minute that we were ever in for this bloke. Said it at the time and still feel the same.
