While it was 5AM there in Nottingham, I watched him play today! 😅

FC Seoul vs this season's champions Ulsan.
It was the last home game of the season, there were 37,000 people inside a huge 66,000 capacity World Cup stadium.
Apparently they broke the league record by reaching more than 500,000 home attendance in a season.
Thanks to the rise of international players, even domestic football seems to be getting more popular here these days.

To say Lingard is popular here would be an understatement.
He's the centre on every banner, and half the shirts I saw had his name on it.
There was even a plushie! 😂

And there he was on the pitch, the number 10 and captain.
He scored! Seeing the entire stadium chant his name out loud was quite an experience.
That was some amazing atmosphere from the home supporters! (look closely and there's a Lingard flag)

All I can see in your post is this:

And think @Alf-engelos Mindminackers will be along shortly.

Interesting article on the BBC sports app. Sounds like he didn't want to come to Forest.
Sounds like his agent steered him towards our offer, rather than one at West Ham which might have been better for his career. Oh well.

Can't Play Left-Back
It was worth a punt on a one year deal. He was dreadful though to be honest - anonymous and ineffective. Never harboured him any ill will, I just think injuries, time not playing and his personal issues had taken a toll on his body. Seemed to be well liked off the pitch and it's difficult to know how much his experience helped the players in training etc... BUT £100k a week was a lot of money for a cheerleader. He came to us for the money, and probably assumed he'd be the first name on the teamsheet . I'm not sure about this rewriting of history blaming others for signing a contract - and that we're the reason his career's gone to shit. He couldn’t even get on our bench when we stayed up by the skin of our teeth. What makes him think West Ham wouldn't have bomb-squadded him by Christmas too? Whatever West Ham offered, they knew he wasn’t worth top dollar and weren't prepared to pay him it. Fair play to them. We were desperate and had to take risks. Funnily enough Luton did the same again year a later with Ross Barkley - and weirdly he played very well and they still went down. Lingard for us was shit, but we stayed up. Funny old game innit.

I seem to remember him suggesting differently at the time, in that it was because Forest had made a real effort and "shown love" in order to sign him.

It was something like that anyway.

In any case, it didn't work out - though I bear him no ill will. Injuries seemingly did him in but he seemed like a positive influence in the dressing room and I think he was fairly active in community projects so it wasn't like he just sat on his arse collecting money.

Ideally it would have worked out on the pitch but alas, that's football. We move on and good luck to him.

Thing is, he was playing most of the time until he got injured wasn't he? Albeit poorly. Had a good game against Spurs in the league cup, then got injured after that. Then we signed Andre Ayew for some reason, who wasn't any better and he didn't get a look in again. Not sure he'd have fared any better at West Ham.

Signing him probably made us look like a more serious proposition to other players. But he did nothing for us on the pitch, for whatever reason.

I don’t see why he’s saying all this though - what’s the benefit?

Listen to what Worrall said about him in his Forest Focus podcast recently. Along the lines of it gave the dressing room a real puff to the chest & say "we are Nottingham Forest".

He was a logical signing for the club at that time, I don't think anyone will change my mind on that.

He wanted Forest/Man U money but to play for West Ham, he also said that commuting to be near his daughter was easier from Nottingham.

Don't wish any ill will towards him but he was not fit enough to contribute on the pitch and the same would have been the case had he joined West Ham or anyone else. He was great off the pitch for us but it seems a bit revisionist to say his hand was forced.

Bit of a different story to when he signed:

"They’ve shown the love and intent to get me to the club. When I see that sort of love, of course I am going to say yes!"

He also stated at the time he wanted to be close to his daughter. He is now on a different continent to her. Wouldnt believe much of what he says to be honest.
More fool anyone who actually takes footballers/managers on their actual word. Everything is media-managed lip service telling us exactly what we want to hear.

Well yes absolutely. I feel a lot of fans were taken in by his media PR though. It distracted a lot from his absolutely bang average performances. For the money spent he must be one of our worst signings of all time. And to top that, his signing probably was the catalyst for all the negative media attention we got for being "big spending"
