You hope our persistence could play a part in him choosing to come here.

But if you offered me one or the other I would go for Bowler even though Wallace is a better player now.

I think we'll go back in for Bowler in the summer, given that he'll only have a year left on his contract and is a young player that we could develop. Feels more in line with our recruitment strategy than trying to financially outmuscle a host of clubs for Wallace IMO.

Its the common-sense choice. The only thing is I have this slight inkling that Wallace is even better than hes appears at Millwall and put him in a team of good players and I think he could smash it. He also provides the deadball skills we will loose when Jimmy goes, which I don't think Bowler is doing for 'pool?.

I don't pay a great deal of attention to most championship players but I've watched Wallace pretty closely for a few years and I think hes very similar to Andy Reid. I'd love to see him in the Garibaldi.

I rate Wallace very highly and have done for a while now, he's an excellent player and I agree that he'll shine even more in a better team. I doubt we are the only club who recognises his qualities though, and unfortunately we are unlikely to be amongst the suitors with the deepest pockets IMO.

Completely agree, which is why I felt the January stance was a mistake (assuming Millwall would take <3M for him, which I think they would have with a contract expiring at the end of the season).
If we were going to throw a bit of money for me this was the one to do it on.

But as I keep saying this is why Murphy is paid the big bucks!

Jed’s best financial move is seeing out his contract, which he is doing. Not sure we ever had much hope of signing him in Jan.

As I loaded the washing machine this morning I said to myself (I hold these interesting debates quite regularly) if we had signed Jed Wallace in Jan we might already be second in the table.

Just a thought.

Unlikely. Our form since January extrapolated over a season would have us winning the league.

In terms of points, there isn't really any realistic hopes of improvement on what we've already done. Maybe we would have beaten Liverpool in the cup tie if Wallace smashed in the chance Zink missed but that's about it.

Yes it is, and the same logic says we have no chance of getting him in the summer, so in effect we have 19 pages of wasted finger epithelial cells!

Depends what division we're in. Might not even want him by summer.

I'd take him if we got promoted. I think he'd excel in the Premier league.

Let's see what happens

A lot of markets would open up if we get promoted, and it would also mean Johnson would likely stay.

In my opinion I would get Bowler regardless & go for Wallace as well if we don't go up.

But I am sure there would be lots more targets in mind.

And if he doesn't, he'll either be a useful player the following season if we go down or we could sell him on to a promotion chasing side.

If we get promoted, signing Wallace on a free transfer makes sense to me. Very little risk involved in doing so.

Agree, I'm surprised he's not been snapped up before now.

Top league and you have the pulling power to recruit on a different level though.

That's true to an extent, but you have to be damn careful with the costs of that "different level" and there are plenty of mercenaries out there looking for a fat contract. Sure the club could bear a big jump in its wage bill if we stay up but even with parachute payments its damn risky.
I'm sorry to say that IMO we've been out of the top league for so long that we probably would have to accept yo-yo'ing as the likely condition for a few years until we can consolidate and as such I would be selecting players with the champ in mind even if we are promoted....

I wouldn't want the club to just accept relegation like Norwich do, but I do think we should still aim to recruit smartly rather than chuck money around like confetti if we go up. We should still aim to recruit younger players that will increase in value, IMO. What we are doing at the moment works for us, so we shouldn't completely abandon it if we go up just because we have more money to spend.

West Brom after him too, according to the Post.

Good money but absolute basket case club.

Tough choice. He's not young so might take the money.

I think, come the summer, there'll be loads more teams after a free agent like Wallace.
If we're still in the Championship, he's probably out of our wage budget. If we're in the PL, he's probably not the type of player we'd target.

As has been said many times before on this thread, once hes out of contract the whole situation for him changes.

Batting order will be lower prem club, parachute club then ring the alarm bell-whose left (and that will include us).

I could see him doing a very nice job for a Leeds or similar (and them being interested on a free), if not a Burnley. Failing that a Norwich or Bournemouth maybe.

Once those avenues are exhuated he'll come into the sphere of clubs like Forest....

Thats assuming we are not promoted of course...

I've said it a few times but if a PL club wanted him already they would have paid money for him. Reality is his transfer fee cost at any point in last few years would have been easily affordable so if he was deemed an important player to sign they wouldn't wait until context expiry.

The only way he plays in the PL next year is if we get promoted and he signs for us.

WBA is a likely destination because they've got parachute payments to offer big bucks and they are in a tough spot where they might throw cash at established players in this league. A bit like Mowatt last year.

I don't know how you reach that conclusion. Theres a difference between the tweaking and panic buys of January and more strategic TF's in the summer and that applies to all clubs. Lower third prem clubs won't throw money away on a fee for a player like Wallace in his last contract year unless they think he'll make a difference in a relegation scrap.

You might be right about WBA, but that only illustrates the point that money talks, particularly in Wallaces situation, which is why he ain't coming here now.

Allegedly according to a Millwall fan I know he's in talks...

On the one hand you'd think we'd hopefully be looking at a younger higher calibre player, but he's free and if our stay is short in the PL he's proven in the championship.
