Because he was the wrong side of 30 and had 18 months at Newcastle where he couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo (4 goals across 35 appearances).
Mateta has a fairly decent record, so I am not sure the comparison is there.

Dunno what you are getting at. He had a decent record but he must be rubbish because nobody else is taking him for X price? Makes no sense. He will want big wages & doesn’t fit the model of half the division. That would explain it fairly simply, as I say it’s easily over complicated.
There is loads of comparisons to Wood. Look at both their careers. Wood went to Newcastle for £25m after 4 years of 10+ goals in a row.

I don't think Mateta is quite as good as he's been made out to be but I still think anything between £25m and £35m represents good value as he's Premier League ready and most importantly is someone I'd expect to be starting games rather than chatting to McAtee et al on the bench.
A big drawback of course is resale value but sometimes you have to to compromise on that a bit if you want to bring in someone proven.

Having spunked 25m on the likes of Bakwa, Kalimuendo, McAtee and Hutchinson, Mateta at 25m is an absolute snip. He'll get you 15 goals every season.

over this season chap, over this season. Its obvious this is his last apart from bit appearances, Though Id suspect Wood, may want to move somewhere slower and quieter.
If you want to trawl back to this time last year. I said we should be replacing Wood a year ago and some in here howled at me. Yes he had just had a great season, but as it all showed. The math of age doesn't lie and Injuries are more common and take longer to get over .

Perhaps but 1 league goal between 2 wingers, a forward and an sticking midfielder across a whole season for upwards of a 100m outlay isnt something we were hoping for this time last year.
That's an awful return whichever way you cut it.
3 of those are likely to be here next year so let's hope they really kick on.

In general there is far too much sentiment involved in our fanbase when you talk about moving someone on, or even just giving a player some genuine competition for his place. Supporters become so attached to players that it clouds their judgment on how the team moves forward in my opinion.

I actually think we need quite a few signings this summer, not just 3 or 4. There’s no area of the team that did particularly well for most of last season, which is why we finished 16th. Our bench often looked very weak.
Ando replacement, striker and winger are priorities, but we definitely need more competition at full back. Throughout the team there’s loads of potential to upgrade/get better competition in if the opportunity arises

I am simply asking 'is there a catch?' because someone who has a fairly decent record, in a league that is crying out for strikers, is suddenly available for half the price he Palace were asking for last summer.
The Wood comparison came from you asking why we could sign him from Newcastle and why nobody else was interested. It was because Wood was dire for 18 months at Newcastle, quite the opposite of Mateta.

There's not a massive clamour here for Mateta. Bit of a ripple but after his knackered knee was revealed nobody is that excited. And Milan have no money so it shouldn't be too difficult to outbid the Cardinale circus.

There are two questions regarding Chris Wood.
- Can he still perform to a level where he is an asset to the team and not a liability?
- Should he still be the main man up top for us in 2026.
So, to answer the first question, I absolutely believe he can still perform. I saw quite a few fans essentially write the guy off when he came back and it's like, a little perspective.
Chris was gone from the 18th of October until the 9th of April. When he came back, he was gradually reintroduced to the team but to be clear, he came back into a team that lost 2 out of the 11 games he played. He's 34 and he had a pretty serious injury, coming back and getting back to sharp fitness at the tail end of the season is no easy feat.
Which brings me to the second question, should he be the main man? I mean unless you can find someone that can bring others into play, score all sorts of goals inside the box and essentially lead the line in every way possible, then yeah probably.
This is Mateta's thread, so if you're asking me if Mateta would be better for us than Wood, I actually don't know. I think Wood gives Forest more overall when he plays but Mateta could perhaps do the strikers job more consistently.
