James Trafford (BUPA)

Definite no to Trafford, really don’t see why people rate him, better around for less money so not worth it.
Forget who he plays for but the guy on loan from Bayern looks really good, Sunderland ??
For someone so tall, he just seems to have absolutely no presence either.

His goalkeeping merits aside, do we need another keeper?

Is Ortega leaving? (Genuine question)

What about Gunn?

If we can retain the above and Sels then we're fine keeper-wise IMO

I think Gunn will be off. Not sure if it was a one year contract but he'll want to get games somewhere.

Ortega would be fantastic to go alongside Sels, but imagine he'll be wanting to play too.

Wouldn't want to rely on John ever again.

That's a big if, though.

Both Ortega and Gunn are out of contract, and while nothing has been said publicly, there's been suggestions that both of them are looking to be first choice - which isn't going to happen here.

He’s no upgrade on Sels right now and it’s likely a couple of years before he is. Is that worth a big punt? Not for me, not when we have massive holes at CM (Ando), winger and striker. I’d rather buy experienced keepers and take lower cost punts on younger keeepers and hope to hit a jackpot

Yes that's why I asked the question

But if they are both looking to be first choice why did either of them sign for Forest in the first place

Nether of them were going to oust Sels, Ortega possibly but only if Sels' form dropped of a cliff

I think it's explained by the short term deals - Ortega we pretty much took over the remains of his City deal, so that he'd get some game time in leading to more options in the summer.

There was suggestions back in Novemberish that Gunn felt mislead or unhappy - he had thought he'd be second choice and stand a good chance of getting minutes in cups etc.

Wouldn't surprise me if 3 of our 4 keepers end up leaving over the next couple months.

I would bring in Dubravka, he’s out of contract & way more reliable than Trafford.

We should only look to be spending any kind of money on a keeper when Sels is done here, and we are not going to attract an amazing one as backup without European football.

Darlow, Meslier & Woodman are also all free agents, all of whom I would also take over spending lots on a keeper who are debatably as good as Trafford anyway.

Stories around that we're in the market for a keeper or two .
Talk that we'll move on from Sels too.
Didn't reach the heights of last season , dropped by his country in a WC year and advancing in years. And each new regime seems to have their own ideas on keepers.
A bit harsh? But suppose that's the life of an elite keeper - a volatile vocation.

Sels has one year left on his deal and will be 35 by the end of next season. I have no issue with forward planning and getting in somebody a year early rather than a year late, but dropping £30m+ on Trafford shouldn't be the plan.

Trafford wouldn't be looking to move anywhere as a backup either, which he would be to Sels here. Not if he has any ambition anyway.

Not sure what Prem teams would suit him. Maybe one of the promoted sides but then he'd probably have to take a big pay cut.

It’s not a popular view, but I’m personally pleased if that is on the cards. Clearly the alternative needs to be an upgrade on what we have under contract next season.

We should plan for it when we know Sels is actually going to leave.

No self respecting good keeper is going to come here and be deputy for a year, teams don’t do this succession planning with keepers. When they need a new first choice, they just sign them. They don’t bring them in as backups for a year.

We should always be looking for upgrades at every position.

If Sels was world class I would understand the reluctance for change. But he’s not, he’s a very good PL keeper. Nothing at all wrong in looking for better options.

No we shouldn’t, not if money is better spent elsewhere. We shouldn’t be going out & spending £50m on a centre back because we should always be looking for upgrades, it would be a complete waste of money even if we get a CB better than what we have.

We have far more important positions to address.

He has a year left on his contract and I haven't read a single article which says Forest are looking to extend him. So I'd take that as he has a year left.

I said in another thread I think Daniel Peretz from Bayern would be a shrewd signing. Southampton were going to pay €8million for him has they been promoted. He has decent experience, good age, would be a solid backup for Sels and can come in for the cup games etc.

Money is better spent on good players.

Otherwise you end up blowing £150m plugging gaps, and not very well in some cases.

Selz had a 7/10 season. I don't see anything wrong with having a steady Eddie in goal with no drama.

Given his age we should probably be identifying someone to come in with a view to replacing him in a season but I don't think I'd break the bank. I've mentioned Charles at Sheff Wed before who has great potential.
