James David Garner

He walks for free in May. Contract talks ongoing? Current it fine so if he’s leaving for a few, albeit a knockdown one, now’s the time. Everton very comfortable now. Not what I expected to be saying 2 months back.
Everton have an extra year’s option on his contract so he’s not really out of contract until next summer.

Think I spotted him on the TV at the boxing this evening. Hopefully combining his trip with a transfer conversation tomorrow morning.

Yeah he was definitely there. He got to know Leigh Wood when he was here, quite a lot of that squad used to go to his fights.

Thought we wanted Garner but Man I weren't considering his sale at that point?

We had loads of business we were going to be doing so needed to get a move on, was just not meant to be.
They were considering it but ten Haag wouldn't allow him to go until he'd seen him preseason. We couldn't afford to wait that long in case they decided to keep him and we'd have been left short. Really sad, as im sure he would have signed here in an instant, but nothing more the club could realistically have done.

Ten Hag really was a complete idiot, everyone knew he wasn't going to give Jimmy a chance yet he still wanted to hold on to him until the last week of August to ultimately tell him he wasn't good enough for United, by then we had already made our 23 moves.

Agree: he liked Forest and would have signed.

He refuses to celebrate if he scores against us due to respect for the club.

I would have loved Garner here - top player - and more attacking and better set pieces than Anderson - but Man U messed us about and only said he was available a week before the season started by which time we had bought our players.

Travesty that we didn't want to pay the 15million for him after we got promoted.

If we signed Garner, Spence & Davis they would all probably be core squad players for us still.
It was Man U who messed us about and sabotaged any deal for Garner by not allowing him to leave until the season nearly started.

Same shit stunt as they pulled with Henderson.
In hindsight, we should have waited for both Garner and Henderson (different seasons). Henderson's injury only kept him out of the first two games of the 22/23 season if I remember correctly, and I'm pretty sure he was on Palace's bench for one of them. We actually signed Vlachula a day after DH signed for Palace and he didn't even start for the first time until November.

Of course we would have missed out on that fabulous PSR fiddle... I mean, excellent negotiating job we did for Vlachula with Newcastle. But if we could have signed him a few weeks earlier instead of Turner (who we only broke even on, due to that Textor fiddle.... I mean, excellent negotiating job with Lyon), we could have had the best of both worlds.

I don't think there's much in it between Henderson and Sels, and Hendo is younger. Sels was so cheap, we could probably have still signed him when we did anyway (later that season), and had both.

As for Garner (again with the benefit of hindsight), he only signed for Everton 2 weeks after we signed Remo Freuler. If we had waited for JG, it meant Garner would only have missed 5 league games. We only got 4 points from them anyway, and Freuler only started in one of them (lost 6-0 at City). We still had Cafu, Yates, Colback and O'Brien at that stage.

Would have been nice to take 3 Man Utd graduates (inc Elanga) for about 45m as well, seeing as they are now worth probably a collective 125m.

I know you could say that we didn't know Man Utd would sell either or both at the time, but I thought at the time it was always pretty obvious they were going to ditch the pair of them (basket case club).

Being bigged up after the match. Could he take Anderson's place?
No chance. He played well and was one of our better performers, but it was so noticeable how we reverted back to sideways and backwards passing with a real struggle to break their lines. I think it's undervalued amongst non Forest supporters just how important Elliot is in how England have been able to play progressively through the opposition lines over the last six months.

For the real games, Anderson's name will always be in the starting XI when he is available.
That goes for England, and Forest.

Agree with @andover red

He did play well but it was very different to how Anderson does the job, with the obvious caveat that Garner didn't have the same quality around him that Ando does.

Anderson starts without question. Garner wouldn't be a bad option to come on with 20 mins left if Anderson is flagging though.
