Ibrahim Sangaré of CÔTE D'IVOIRE

I thought it was really obvious at the ground how badly he was struggling so was surprised to come on here after and see mostly praise. Needed to go and check for myself that my eyes weren't deceiving me during the game.

To be fair to him, the one which Rogers put over the bar from six yards I initially thought he was again out of position, but having seen the footage back I'm OK with him initiating the press where he did. Got a bit unlucky it got through him.

Don't think we'll have these issues when we play Burnley so it's not a major concern, although Porto play in a similar way to Villa so I'd be be sorely tempted to start Dom over him on Thursday.
Even though it was only when Sangare came on against Porto that we actually looked to gain any control in the midfield? Porto had spent 75 minutes running around Yates and Dominguez prior to that.

Yes.

I don't think we'll line-up the anywhere near the same as we did in the first round so I don't think it's a good comparison to make.

Works both ways, lots of people saying he had a great game without really saying why.

I thought he had a poor game because he was constantly caught way out of position and all Villa's big chances came through finding space too easily in our central midfield areas.

15 yards out of position. Gets caught ball watching. Tries to rectify and then once again gets caught out of position leading to this:

View attachment 58924

Watkins eventually gets fed and should score.

Five minutes later it's the same thing:

View attachment 58925

Rogers ends up hitting the bar 10 seconds after this.

7 minutes later we're in this scenario:

View attachment 58926

He sees Murillo press Rogers and move out of position but doesn't drop into the space Murillo has vacated. Instead he decides to press from here, and unsurprisingly the ball goes straight through the gaping hole again.

Second half now, engages in a press again way out of position and gets spun:

View attachment 58927

Less than five seconds later this is the build up:

View attachment 58928

McGinn almost scores from it.

Closing stages, not paying attention, needs to be goalside:

View attachment 58929

Turns into this:

View attachment 58930

Murillo ends up having to engage and Sangare, again, doesn't drop into his space:

View attachment 58931

Watkins hits the bar.

Those are still taken from 6 minutes of highlights, but the whole game was like that where he was getting caught out of position and Villa playing with complete freedom in the hole time and time again.
Two of those pictures are a bigger slight on Murillo than Sangare imo, committing himself way too high with no chance of getting the ball, and leaving a gaping hole behind him. He's been watching Morato too much.

It's funny, the Greek commentator had lots of praise for him and how his interceptions started most of our good moments. Maybe the flip side of that, and him being perhaps a bit overzealous in trying to intercept their passes, is that he was caught out of position often. Can't say I looked as closely as you did - I only remember his blatant wrong pass with that header in the 1st half.

Fair play Maxi, this is some really interesting analysis.

I don't completely disagree with you but I do disagree on the ultimate source of the problem. The issue we faced on Sunday, and what showed up Sangare in what you have clipped here, is Villa's overload in the middle of the park. With Onana, Tielmans and Barkley in the middle and Rogers and McGinn playing narrow and in the number 10 half spaces they effectively had a five man midfield. Sangare and Anderson had absolutely no chance with that and it's no surprise they left gaping holes because Morgan wasn't dropping deep to pick up one of the five so they effectively had two men each with one left over. I couldn't believe VP didn't adjust CHO in to counter it, I might even have been tempted to haul Hutch off in the first half for Dominguez to try and redress the balance.

In that situation Sangare was always going to leave space in behind him with people roaming free because he was exposed by their system, and that's before we get to your reasonable point about Villa moving the ball well. In the circumstances I think he did well, but the biggest issue was that our system, matched up against theirs, hung him and Ando out to dry. Morgan should have taken it on himself to do more and VP should have changed it, none of which Sangare can do anything about, aside from maybe ringing out his captain to do more to help. I think he did pretty well in the circumstances since those circumstances were always going to make him look poor.

Absolutely this. The overload in central areas was by design and exacerbated by Hutchinson not bothering particularly with his defensive duties. For their goal Hutchinson just watches Rogers' underlapping run.
Sangare was constantly being dragged across to support Aina. Also think about the number of times Anderson had to engage McGinn.

Systemic failure mainly on Parreira's shoulders, though it would've been nice to see an onfield reaction such as MGW dropping in to support.

I thought Sangaré was dog crap first half but came into it abit more second. He has improved a lot but I preferred our midfield last season. More energy.

I think Yates is harder to play against than Sangaré and adds more threat going forwards.

It doesn't even need looking at closely Steve. Villa created a 5v2 by tucking their wider players into the half spaces.

Sangare wasn't completely on it to his usual level yesterday but that was mainly because of the massive overload which Villa created in the middle of the park. This is why I cannot fathom some of the suggestions that he was shit yesterday, it's simply not true.

Given the ineffectiveness of Hutchinson yesterday I was surprised that VP didn't take him off much earlier and bring Dom in to take up a right sided central position to flood the area with more of our own bodies.
Think VP countered it by keeping wingers high as we were at home, hoping they would take advantage of 1-1 with full backs but they weren’t good enough. Seemed sensible gamble with us being at home, but probably Dom plays if this was an away match.

For me he edged it for MOTM just ahead of Neco and Dom last night. Won every challenge I saw and was a calming presence on the ball when others around him were getting a bit panicky.

Think he gave the ball away maybe twice yesterday, and both were forward passes attempting to put someone through.

Just made it look easy. We need him fit for the run in or we're f**ked.

He wasn't bad but he was very slow to release the ball which was a key problem in the first half. Not just him the whole team were at it.
He was but the issue was the lack of passing options. There was nothing in front of him and every other option was no better than the position he was already in. He then backed himself to keep hold of it instead.

It goes back to one of the underlying issues in midfield which is Anderson sitting far too deep too often.

There were options to the flanks.

Not that the wingers would have done anything with it but....

He is totally controlling games at the minute, has a real authority to his game & never negative with the ball either - both in his passing but also the way he wriggles away when teams look to press him. He has become the player we all imagined he would be when he signed, that is for sure.
I'm genuinely baffled when people say they don't see what Sangare does. He's a rolls Royce of a player in that position.

It's exactly what Yaya Toure used to do for Man City
