Don't blame him for wanting what he is entitled to especially as its likely to be his last contract. No one forced us to offer him a crazy contract.

So long as he's holding up his end of the bargain ie. keeping himself in shape. if he's just sat on his arse playing Xbox all day then that's a different story.

No use blaming him....blame the people who on the basis of one goal thought he was what we needed.
I think its this really, it could have worked out but it didn't, I'm a bit cautious going in on players in this situation because honestly when I saw him in interviews going on loan to Notts County he seemed like he was a broken man and possibly how we've treated him has played a part in that.

Its definitely wise for everyone to go their separate ways and move on, we don't need to be vindictive about it. Financially paying him off won't have to be taken from the sale proceeds of one of our academy treasures for once, the previous regime (Vrentzos) dropped the ball with this one but hopefully we've learned our lessons.

Think it's more than he's lost his love of the game, which is understandable given what he's been through outside of football. Sometimes transfers don't work out, I think this one didn't because of personal tragedy. As a football club it's a shame we lost money, but his loss is far more profound.

No point getting upset about it, it's not Arter's fault. I think the best thing we can do is be proactive and try and save ourselves a bit money wherever we can. No point paying him if a club is willing to take even 5% of his contract for the next 2 years! Wrexham in the national league may have a little nibble if we give them a favorable offer.

At the end of the day if we expect good players to honour their contracts they sign with us than we can't expect the crap players to walk away from a lucrative deal.

He doesn't need to love the game any more than a window cleaner needs to love squeegees.

Many of us have had horrific tragedies in our lives, and some have suffered a lot more than our fair share, but we're still expected to do the job we're paid to do. All power to players and their agents for negotiating iron-clad contracts that seemingly ensure they all get paid regardless of application. But next time you're forking out a king's ransom for shirts/tickets and half-time burgers, it's worth remembering that it's club's collective willingness to offer ludicrous contracts that end up with us getting ripped off left right and centre.

Bit of a ridiculous state of affairs that not only is he still on our books but has had his contract extended and a pay rise!

None of that is his fault though. As long as he's fulfilling his contractual duties I don't begrudge him what we agreed to pay him.

The most disappointing aspect for me is that things never worked out, right from the word go. He flopped almost immediately.

A player with his past history surely should have made more impact at a middling Championship club.

I've heard that if we qualify for Europe then he gets a knighthood too.

He should be ennobled and called Lord Lucan going by the amount of time he's been missing.

To be fair, I doubt many of us know what's really happening with him. It may be that he turns up at training and can't be arsed, doesn't put any effort in and is happy to go home after trousering a wedge for doing sweet FA. On the other hand he could be working his balls off but nothing is coming together. He may have a fantastic attitude behind the scenes at the club and in training or he may be a complete cockwomble. Who knows? We also don't know how his personal tragedy has affected his mental health, he could still be all over the place because of it. Mental health is probably the biggest taboo subject in modern times. Has anybody who is really and truly itk commented on it in public? I'd be extremely reluctant to believe anything posted on twatter (other social media platforms are just as crap available) because of the amount of BS posted by the hard of thinking.

I think elite level football is somewhat different to window cleaning. I do take the point though, but the fact remains that events effect people.

Your right. Window cleaners are almost universally self employed, with zero professional support on offer.
Whereas football clubs literally employ people who'll change light bulbs for players. Events certainly affect people, you won't find me disagreeing with that.

This, all day long. Some things are way more important than kicking a sack of air around.

The other thing to note about Arter is that he was bought in by Lamouchi who was promptly fired - had maybe three games with the boss who wanted him.

That said he was terrible for us whenever I've seen him - didn't he arrive suspended and then got injured? Think there was also a thing where he supposedly talked a potential loan signing out of coming too, which is ultimately what saw him frozen out.

Anyway, turned out to be an awful signing, but I suspect none of the above influenced his decline more than that of his experiences outside of football.

One day, football will come to its senses and all contracts will be a basic salary (very basic - same sort of numbers as you and I are on), with bonuses for making the 1st team squad, the matchday squad, the starting XI and bonuses by team position.

At that point, teams won't be able to stockpile players because if they're not getting 1st team action, they could be earning VASTLY more elsewhere, and as we know, it's all about the money, and then when the NFFC/Arter/Clough/Jnekinson situation arises, the club isn't harmorrhaging vast sums on non-contributing employees.

A maximum basic wage would be great, for bonuses and enhancements, do what you like/can afford.

What are the outside factors?
He and his wife lost a daughter during childbirth some time back. The consensus among Bournmouth fans was that he was never the same after.

Incidentally the Sabri thing can also be applied to Lyle Taylor, but unlike Arter he buckled down, took his loan chances and stayed with the squad. At one point Arter told Hughton he didn't want to play where he wanted to integrate him too, so there's a number of factors here, but my original point remains.

Interview here prior to his Charlton move was an interesting one, though he never made that work.

At the time Arter went to County, he said that while Andy Reid had been great with him in the U23s, he needed a focus to training- a game to work towards each week.

What ever happened, it probably wasn't about motivation. You don't drop into non-league if you're happy to coast.

We'll probably have to wait for someone's auto biog to find out what really happened. But, as always, in lieu of the explained, speculation and innuendo masquerades has truth.

Indeed, and I know nothing, just piecing together various bits from memory, so that definitely applies to what I've said here.

Obviously that’s not nice but he should still be able to play football. Incidentally, and it’s not a competition, but we’ve had six miscarriages and whilst upsetting you do get on with things and it hasn’t affected our jobs which aren’t as healthy mentally as exercise.

Perhaps it’s all just irrelevant and he can’t be arsed any more, like a load of comfortable people who can just coast in life.

Quite possibly so. I've been in the same position as you too (sorry to hear about your losses - that's brutal), and we both carried on professionally.

As said I'm guessing, based on various things I've read from him and about him over the years. It sounds like it really affected him, and different things affect people in different measures- we know from PTSD studies that the exact same event can affect two people in two completely different ways.

Anyway, it's all conjecture on my part and I'm as disappointed as anyone at the way it worked out for him here, though I will say that he reports the fees being talked about as ridiculous and has it as Sabri knowing his game inside out, so I don't buy that we snapped him up for a kings ransom on the strength of one goal. I guess I also prefer to give folk the benefit of the doubt where mental health is concerned (if that I'd the case) based on my own experiences of such.
