Harry Arter

Hopefully the Club will learn from this issue in the future.
Is there anyone left to learn anything from their 'mistake'?
Hughton was the manager who thought he wanted him.
Ioannis Vrentzos was the CEO who signed off on the deal.
I've lost count of how many recruitment teams we've been through since we signed him.

Only constant still at the club is big EM himself.

he was actually a Lamouchi signing just after we missed out on the play offs. No doubt signed because he had scored the winner against us for Fulham a few weeks before

Who's the better signing out of Harry Arter or Jonjo Shelvey? Can we get a poll please?
Arter was worse, it's not even close. (I'm not prepared to use a word like "better" in conjunction with either of those).

A couple reasons. Firstly because we'll end up carrying his entire wage (mostly) for the full 4 years, with there being just 4 months where Charlton paid a small part of it - whereas Shelvey is on a much shorter deal and it seems like most of that will be out on loan with a decent chunk of wages covered.

Secondly because for the first 2 years of Arters deal we were in the Championship where he was amongst the highest earners in the League (amongst non-parachute payment clubs at least) so would have been a much higher percentage of the wage bill meaning a much bigger drain/anchor on the club.

According to a (seemingly reasonably informed) friend of one of my sons, Arter is presently studying for UEFA coaching quaifications, with the club allowing him to coach academy players as part of that process, which quite possibly explains why he turned-out for the U-21s the other day.

He trains with the u21s, and has done since he returned from his last loan.

The game last week was not the first time he featured for the u21s nor the first time he has captained them.

That makes sense if he's doing some coaching sessions with them as well.

Can't Play Left-Back
Shelvey cost us at least 3 points (maybe even 5) with his mistakes against Everton and Villa, which probably should have relegated us. It was only unexpected (but not underserved) results against Arsenal and Chelsea that kept us up. Arter may have cost us financially, but I don't think he had a detrimental effect on the club's fortunes on the pitch (he didn't play enough for that). Not saying he wasn't bad, just not sure his performances had much of an impact. Had we never been promoted then Arter's wage would have been a far bigger detriment than it actually was. But we were, so we can afford to pay a lot of money to someone that's never going to play. The way I see it, Arter is just one of those signings that didn't work out and I hold him no ill will, especially with his personal circumstances. It felt like Shelvey was actually out to sabotage us, while picking up a huge wage. Thank God Cooper bombed him out when he did.

I think time has healed some of the wounds there, and the true story of how bad he was for us brushed over.

He played in more than a quarter of our games, in a season where we finished 17th and were in very real danger of relegation.

Across the games he played, we averaged less than a point per game (12 from 13) which was form that would have had us relegated. That stat is being extremely generous to him as well - of the 3 wins amongst those 13 games, two of them he was a late sub with the game already won, and the other he was taken off before HT. In all 3 games he wasn't on the pitch when we scored.

Whereas if we just counted games where he played at least 45 minutes the record is 2 points from 9 games. The first time we won consecutive games all season was literally straight after he was finally dropped. I don't think it can be overstated just how much worse we were with him in the team and how ineffective he was.

Ah, but if we hadn’t got promoted his contract would have expired by now wouldn’t it?
I had big hopes for arter but he never lived up to the expectations, don’t think his personal circumstances can be overly blamed on his lack of effort as has been mentioned previously, he played a good few years after it happened before signing for us.
hopefully he is providing a good influence for the kids and we will get worth out of him in that way.

oh, f*** shelvey btw…

I think it says a lot that the club seem to be quite happy with Harry Arter taking his coaching badges with our U21's but couldn't wait to get Shelvey out of the squad, the club and even the country at the first opportunity.
We've offloaded Arter several times though and he always returns like a bad penny.

Notts fans I know thought he was an absolute disgrace in his brief time there. Overweight, unfit and uninterested. He somehow managed to stand out as terrible even at non-league level.

Based on his "professionalism" there I'd be concerned about the pearls of wisdom he's passing onto our youngsters.

I think I'd back the judgement of Steve Cooper over yours in this instance but thanks all the same.

Yeah there probably is some recency bias there. To be honest, I think I've scrubbed most of the 20-21 season from my memory (with good reason). From what I do remember, Hughton did try and play him as number 10 at one point too :ROFLMAO:

True, but at least we can afford to pay him. If the devil was making a deal that we could only stay in the Prem as long as Harry Arter remains at the club on a big fat wedge working in the canteen, then I'd happily give a contract until his dying day!
