GREAT LIVES-BRIAN CLOUGH

I must admit that I rarely watch T.V, I listen to the radio most of the time and there's a programme on Radio 4 called Great Lives. Someone nominates a person who they consider have contributed to their particular industry. It is now being repeated on Radio 4 Extra which can only be accessed with a DAB radio or via the internet. Next Thursday ( 6th October ) at 18.30 John Motson nominates Brian Clough and it's quite good. I know this because I heard it first time round. He tells one or two good Cloughie stories. Check it out

I wonder if it includes the interview where the great man gave Motson an absolute rinsing?

I've got a good Cloughie story from back in the day.

I'll post it up later after I get back from my POF date, if I get home at all :hey:

Better than any shit Saunders could come up with.

Over the years I've been told quite a few stories about Cloughie, not all of them complimentary. I was told a very good one by a former goalkeeper about meeting the manager at the Novotel for an away match and I've got a cracking Lee Chapman story. I'm reluctant to post them but I'll tell anyone face to face. The Lee Chapman is potentially on the edge. And I'm not just winding you up

I suppose everyone's heard it by now, but I like the Peter Shilton cheque story. Real Cloughie.

I can't remember details, but I think it was towards the end of the season when we won the Div 1 Championship. Shilts was looking very perturbed and Cloughie asked him what was wrong. "I'm in a bit of trouble at the bookies" says our man. The figure was mentioned which ran into thousands. With his eye on the forthcoming very important match, Cloughie says "Don't worry, here's a cheque for? thousand". Shilts brightened up at this and played a blinder in the game. When they came back in at the end of the game Cloughie congratulated Shilts and said "Now where's that cheque!"

It is sad because Clough wouldnt have worked nowadays with player egos. It is sad that players have too much power now. Not everything has to change and some things have to change I understand that but the pendulum has definitely gone in the players favour now. I have never seen a group of people get paid so much as footballers and moan so much about playing. As a fan it is galling to see footballers get paid 100k a week than moan they have have to play 60 games in a season. Cloughey would have hated it.
