It depends what you want out of the loan. The main reason for Fin going out on loan is not to hone his skills - he's going on loan to get experience playing proper competitive minutes alongside and against senior professionals.

If his spell at Carlisle is a success, then it could lead to a loan at a higher level next season - but as it stands right now, the important thing is to place him somewhere he stands a good chance of starting the season as first choice and likely playing good minutes. Forest probably could've found a League One (or for that matter, a higher placed League Two) loan for him, but if it meant sitting on the bench all year it'd be utterly pointless.
Plus the manager is important too, if SC trusts PS with his development, that's even better than just sending him off to a bunch of cloggers.

He's still basically a kid.

I'm not saying he should stay at the U23. I'm saying that loanees should be playing at least at League One level (and preferably Championship level) now that you are in the Premier.
I don't think it really works like that. We were champ less than 2 months ago so our u23s aren't all of a sudden champ ready... if they were they'd have been first team last season.

As others have said if he excels what you suggest would be his next step. Given how short tenures in England are these days, managers want either tried and tested or should be levels above, hence this move.

GreeksBearingGifts as has been said by others, look into Worral, Yates, Johnson career trajectory.

The hope is they have an experience that builds their confidence, resilience, match savviness. To come back more well rounded characters with professional games under their belt.

Staying in the nest playing U23 is more of an incubator. Loans are sink or swim. Getting the timing right for an appropriate move for the player is a challenge of moving parts.

He's playing as RWB in a 5 which is good.
According to the Carlisle forum he was very good yesterday:

Playing some nice stuff here. I like the look of Back and Moxon.

Back – 7 – Looks a great signing. Caught out positionally a few times, but given his experience it’s only to be expected. His tackling, general defending and use of the ball (especially in the final third of the pitch) was excellent all round. If he doesn’t get kicked to shit by Division Four cloggers he should be an asset this season.

Back looks like he will be a real threat going forward

Armer and Back were solid. Back looked better going forward, beating the full back on several occasions

Guy Moxon and Back very good

Played every minute of Carlisle's league matches this year (and all but 14 in the cup) so good loan fir him in terms of experience.

Anyone know how he's been playing up there? MotM first game I think, not sure about after that. No numbers yet in terms of goals assists, but obviously that's not everything.

Think the lad had a major injury as he’s just finished surgery. Unfortunate for the lad because wasn’t he playing tonnes for Carlisle?

Yeah, this is unfortunate. He was a regular starter and well thought of at Carlisle. Still not sure what the injury was but let's hope he comes back soon and stronger.

Well done Forest, great gesture.

I'd like to think other Premier League clubs would do the same but I wouldn't bank on it.

There should be a sliding scale of wage contribution IMO.

PL - Champ 50/50
PL - L1 75/25
PL - L2 or lower 100/0

Unless the PL club agrees to cover more of course. There should be more ways money can filter down the leagues so clubs like Carlisle, Sutton and Derby can get the help they need.

Saw this last month, looks very much like he is at least following them and them vice versa, not sure if all of his recovery work is done with us or not but their fans and manager seem to expect him back for their promotion push.

They clearly like him - and why wouldn't they? He seems to be a reasonably capable player with the right attitude and intelligence to do his best.

Watching with a keen eye to see how he gets on against Peterborough tonight. He’s up against a real pace merchant in Ricky Jade-Jones.
