Emmanuel Dennis

Just an absolutely brain dead player though.
To play at this level you need a football brain.
He was just awful from that perspective
To be fair, he looked really good at Watford, before he came here.
That said, if we had a time machine and got Sarr instead!

Maybe controversial - but I wouldn't entirely blame the player that things haven’t worked out for him.

Looking back, our first transfer window back in the premier league was a shambles. I know we had to sign players to compete, but in the end, we basically had four different factions signing players and it was left to Cooper to gel them all together into some type of cohesive unit.

It seemed fairly clear that Cooper didn’t trust Dennis and a result he never got a decent run in the side. He started 6 games and basically disappeared after that Leeds defeat (where everyone thought Cooper would be sacked).

Hopefully Dennis will be one the last expensive ‘flops’ we have. The club is obviously more professional nowadays – perhaps driven by the understanding they can’t afford to waste 10s of millions on bad transfers (see also: Harry Arter and Carl Jenkinson)

The problem with Dennis is we played a highly structured, counter attacking style of play which required our players to work hard and both attack and defend as units.

Dennis was for the most part quite lazy, and had no intention of ever doing things as part of a unit, it was all about his individual contribution.

He won't succeed in the Premier League because the only players good enough to truly be allowed the free role that Dennis so wants at this level are players of Messi/Ronaldo type calibre.

He might do OK in Italy. He'll never play in the PL again.

Totally agree-certainly had talent and when he played he did create threats, but his style/attitude was someone just playing for himself.

I do sort of wish we had had him on the bench vs Everton and Leicester last season just for the pure chaos though. Nobody knows what he'll do next, including himself so it could've been a piece of individual magic that was needed.

Unfortunately that is the only role you could ever imagine him having at this level now.

There are loads of players that haven't entirely worked here & half of them are genuinely good players.

The problem is he has been the same everywhere he has gone out on loan too. I think people are just making excuses for him, Dennis has only got himself to blame. He won't be suited to any division until he sorts himself out, wasted talent.

He is the sort of player we would used to sign at this point in his career and get really excited about when we were a Championship club but I will be surprised if he hits a good level again.

I didn't see much of Watford the season before, but the logic behind us getting him was quite clear, he had done well in a side near the bottom of the table and was young hence resale value.

But at least for us, under Cooper in the PL we did require our attackers to defend as well, which is why we hardly scored many - last season NES ended up taking a lot of defensive responsibility off MGW, Elanga, CHO and Wood so we could get the ball to them when the rest of the team had done their job. Cooper didn't really do that, and it didn't suit Dennis at all to defend.

Now, it's pretty academic with his various loan spells having pretty much universally flopped, but he would probably do better in the current setup. We don't rely on the whole team to defend any more and he is relatively fast and has decent skills provided he can use them properly that is.

I don't think that he would still be a viable option though, he is not good enough to be given that freedom in the PL, as you point out.

An expensive mistake in hindsight, but made enough sense at the time for us to do it, and it could have worked out.

Rangers mate just asked me about him and then a minute later sent me this photo from their training ground. Is that him? Certainly appears to be Forest training gear.

I have doubts it’s him but can’t see his face at all! They’re also after defenders apparently. Probably someone completely different, guessing our training kit is hardly unique.

He had chances to show what he could do, especially on loan, but didn't seem to be determined enough to make the most of it.

It shows the risk of signing a player based on stats, or after one good season. Some players can't sustain it or adapt to new systems.

Is he having a run out for County today?
