Did always rate this guy. Always thought he was better than Darlow.
He was, but he came in when Darlow was first choice and he'd hardly played at Wolves, a year after we actually sold Darlow and got him loaned back (presumably part of the loan back was that Darlow played, because he wasn't good that season, and then Psycho dropped him for a bit and then Freedman put him back in the team when DdV hadn't done much wrong).

DdV really only got the Freedman season (when Darlow's loan had expired) which ended with Williams as caretaker in the team and I think Evtimov was backup that year (probably we couldn't afford a keeper, although i think we did try to get one). Then when Montanier came in the year after he went off injured after about 5 minutes in the first match v Burton and then we had to play the traffic cone for a bit until we ended up with the mad serb (who got dropped for the cone after a while, then the cone got injured and Jordan Smith finished the season). Considering Mad Vlad was probably a rushed signing and Henderson was presumably only brought in as a reserve option I wonder how that season would have been if he hadn't left for Celtic after the first match, given defence was an obvious struggle all season and the issues with playing 4 keepers probably didn't help much (c.f. last season).

I guess part of the thing with Darlow was that as a young English born GK doing reasonably in the 2nd tier he had transfer value - more so than an ageing Dutch keeper who was on a free - and that he needed to be playing to get that value. If Billy had dropped him for the new keeper then he wouldn't have been able to get that 8m (?) from the bar codes for Darlow and Lascelles (probably just got less for Lascelles) and then they wouldn't have been able to buy Antonio (7m sale) and Britt (15m sale) with that money, etc etc. It was quite a good sequence of deals, the Fawaz era wasn't all that bad.

Staying with Darlow for a bit it seemed a bit bold of McLeish to bomb Camp out and play Darlow instead, but look how that turned out for both of them. It was probably the best thing he did, though we did sign Darius Henderson and loan in Elliott Ward and Gonzalo Jara when he was manager, who didn't overall do too badly for us.
