Big season for the lad, he needs first team men's football now he's 20 or he'll join the pile of ones who looked good in the academy but didn't make the step up.

You can almost tell at about 17/18 if they're going to be good enough, if they're knocking on the door like Mighten and Johnson are, or if they're still in the U23s.

Always liked the look of him , Met his Brother Tom at Hull a couple of years ago during a reserve game and he is a cracking young man .
I hope he makes it I really do.

Good luck to him.

He's a good footballer. My concerns in recent years has been his height as he seemingly never got any taller.. His loan at Alfreton saw them play him left midfield and I have wondered if he's needed to change position.

Hope he has a cracking season and it makes all the difference for him.

You don't need to be tall to play as a full back. But you do need to be quick and strong enough to get in the right positions and put a tackle in.

As he's 20 I don't think Danny will be getting much taller than he currently is, that doesn't really happen at all, but if he's a bit lightweight he could still work on that (which is why we shouldn't discard players who are later developers but talented). Though looking at the pictures he doesn't look like a stick like Dowell (hehe) or Edser do.

Yeah that's fair, I should have added that without height and a real turn of pace, then that's where my concerns were from.

I suppose it's always happened in football, but now more than ever, teams focus on areas they can exploit an opposition. Look at Sheff Wed, they put Lucas Joao wide right so he was 1-on-1 with Osborn all game, and has is Osborn to deal with that?

I'm far from someone who believes you need a team of 6'2 big blokes. But there's certain areas you can get exploited.

One thing Danny has is a mighty fine left-foot that he uses to put in beautiful crosses.

Ian Holloway will be his manager. Interesting prospect.

Decent manager Holloway.
Should be a good fit for Danny.

Good move for him that. You’d fancy Holloway to have Grimsby challenging

Is it likely we will push anyone else Holloway's way? I imagine he'd be a good manager to work under.

You don't need to be tall to play as a full back.

Football is getting more and more physical, whether it's height, strength, stamina or pace - they all matter more than they used to, in every position.

I got judged to be too small to play at centre back when I was younger, so moved forward to centre midfield. I probably would be too small for that position too now if I was coming through as a youngster now.

Seems to be that small folk can only get away with their height in more forward positions now, either as a #10 or inside winger.

Maybe some of these positions (more than ever) now demand the whole package of pace, power, height, stamina in an ideal world. But that has always been the case to an extent, especially at youth level when players are hoovered up. When I was playing a lot of academies (or whatever they were called then) nabbed anyone who was big and strong over technical ability. Then it was pace they wanted, maybe Stamina too. Now they want it all rolled in to one player. A full back doesn’t have to be overly tall but maybe not a midget admittedly. Full backs now need pace, stamina and athleticism.

As stated by Bryan above, now been confirmed by Ian Holloway

Good luck to him. I have personally had my doubts grow over the past year whether he'd manage the move into the men's game. Great challenge for him this season, will be a real test on his ability to manage the physical elements the game can throw at you, to then earn the right to show his always undoubted ability with the football.

One thing is for sure with Holloway - He identifies what players are good at, and gets them to do it as much as possible.

Only seen him a couple of times, but looked pretty good to me, so I wish him well and hope to see him back in the Garibaldi soon.

Some good words from Holloway.

“I’ve managed to get him from Nottingham Forest, he’s been with their first-team for the last few weeks,” Town boss Ian Holloway said.

“I’m absolutely delighted to add him to our group.

“He’s really fresh, he wants to get forward, he wants to play football.

“He’s an attacking left-back and I’m made up that I’ve got him.”

Holloway says there was competition for Preston’s signature, but his relationship with Forest academy chief Gary Brazil helped secure the switch.

“He’s flying, absolutely flying, I’m delighted to have him,” he told GrimsbyLive of Preston.

“I’m very, very lucky to have Danny Preston.

“At Nottingham Forest, they’ve got a brilliant youth set-up, I was terrified he was going to do so well he’d end up playing for the first-team and they would keep him.

“Luckily for me, Gary Brazil and I go back a long way and he wanted to come to me.

“A first division club wanted him, but they wanted him to come to us, so I’m absolutely delighted to have him.”

The 20-year-old left-back has been a regular for Forest’s youth sides for a number of years, most recently with the Under-23s.

Announcing the deal, the Reds academy said on Twitter: “Best of luck to @d_preston3 who joins @officialgtfc on a season-long loan.”

„Ollie“ Holloway might be as mad as a box of frogs, but he knows a player when he sees one.

I’ll keep an eye on their results to see how young Preston progresses.

It’s good to know that Holloway thinks so highly of Danny.

He is a good manager with sound judgment of a player so he and Danny should work well together.

I am confident that Danny will come back to us a better player.
