Current state of the squad

We need to start shipping out, pronto.

Then number one priority is a striker. We need a proper goalscorer up there and I don’t care how much it costs. We have so few goals in the squad and no reliable striker. Said it in another thread but with a good defence the difference between scoring 45-50 goals and 55-60 goals is the difference between a relegation battle and a European place.

Could do with a left wing back, I’d prefer a new backup keeper as I think John Victor is awful, we have numbers at CM but I wouldn’t turn down a blow your socks off midfielder and I think we need one more quality 10 to fight Jesus for a place next to MGW (I know people will argue but I don’t fancy any of the wingers being very impactful there)

I love how despite being down to the bare bones squad wise several times since we got promoted some folk still want to get rid of almost the entire squad they don't see as being an automatic starter.
I don't see any evidence of that here.

We have 29 players. The discussion is more around who's likely to be 3rd choice or beyond.

Absolutely. 'Bare bones' is what we absolutely are not down to right now so that's not even in the discussion.

I think it's taken as read that we'll bring in another four as a minimum so something has to give.

25 senior players by my count:

Sels, John
Aina, Netz, Williams, Savona, Richards
Murillo, Milenkovic, Morato, Diomande
Schlager, Dominguez, Sangare, Yates, MGW, McAtee
Bakwa, Ndoye, Hutchinson, CHO
Jesus, Wood, Awoniyi, Kalimuendo

Plus: Cunha, Abbott, Bindon and Moreira who are U21 and will either be sent out on loan or don't count in squad numbers. (Cunha will stay I presume).

So if we assume Richards isn't in our plans, and that Kalimuendo/Awoniyi, Bakwa and Savona could/will be replaced - that's four in/four out to maintain a 25 man squad, plus loans for Bindon, Moreira, and maybe Abbot.

We definitely need to start getting rid of players but I don't see us getting rid of our club captain, the cheap young left sided wing back that was bought in to be developed, and all three of Hutchinson/Ndoye/Bakwa. I can see Bakwa being moved on but unless someone is offering us good money it's highly unlikely we'll see Ndoye leave this window

Netz is a particularly odd one for people to get itchy about binning off. 23, arrived in January for next to nothing, played well when called upon (despite missing out on the Europa squad), and an actual left-footed left back, the only one we currently have.

Definitely, I could see more of a case for someone like CHO to be moved on (although i'd quite like to see what he has to offer alongside MGW in this Glasner system)

They're U21 and so yes don't count towards the 25 man PL list. But they should still be in conversations as they do need to have their future determined - whether that's around the first team, out on loan, or sold.

I don't think the PL 25 man list is that relevant this season. If we go by what OG has indicated, we're probably not going to use the full extent of the 25 anyway.

Yeah I think 25 is about the right number to be aiming for for the group but that number should include any under-21 players we intend to be involved in the first team. So that would include Cunha, but not Abbot and Bindon who should probably go out on loan. We’ll also need a third goalkeeper.

We have to sell though if we want to bring any in. The squad is at capacity as it is.
Agreed, we will need to move a couple out on loan and likely sell 2 or 3, your post however lists about a dozen players with the suggestion 'most if not all' will be got rid of, which would leave us way too short.

I agree, for me too, the main demand is for a striker who scores goals. We've had enough of the Lucca's of this world.

I am hoping that Olly has a target or two and has told the recruitment squad (if we still have one) who he wants and we are now just waiting for the player (players?) to arrive.

Of course, I live in this odd nether world where dreams come true, so don't hold your breath.

Especially as from his few appearances last season he looked like a fullback that likes to bomb on down the line, he certainly looked like he develop into a decent wingback.

That's what I was thinking, IMO there is no way he leaves. At the very least, if another LB/LWB comes in, he will be their cover.

To be fair, just looking at that post it was clearly stated as being in the context of a hypothetical 5 more incomings. So the net reduction being proposed there would be at most 7, ie a squad of 22..

There are some conversations on here about Williams playing on the right, and we must get another Left Wingback, but I think that is just what posters want. OG is clearly after another Right wingback so he obviously must be cool with Williams playing the Left flank along with Netz, and maybe him just being a backup on the right.

I do get the opinions about left footedness, but Williams is great on the left so what some posters want (a LWB) and what will probably happen (OG), might not be aligned.

I think a RWB will be found, a striker will be found. Looks like we are also pursuing other Mids. Not sure of what OG thinks of our backup keeper...As for who goes, we all have our views of certain players but unless officially stated, we just don’t know. (but it’s fun to speculate!)

My personal worry is for Dominguez, especially if we get another Mid. Where does that leave him. I would hate to lose him.

Love the conversations on here. They give me fresh thoughts and perspectives every day. Thank you.

Updated with Awoniyi's departure and added total number of players and squad registration places required.

Assuming Richards is not going to be registered, we have two places remaining for players born before 01 January 2005. These will presumably be taken by a striker and central midfielder.

Striker and right wingback by all accounts

Also Glasner wants a smaller squad of 20 - 21 outfield players so total squad might be 23 - 24 including u21s

So lot of outgoings to go - Bindon, Abbott etc

Yeah, normally I'd be counting numbers on the 25, on the non-homegrown limit, etc. But given what OG has said I think it's pretty clear that any incomings are going to be more than offset by outgoings, and we're going to be well short of hitting any limits by the time the dust has settled.

What I would do:
Buy a starting CF, LWB, CM and AM, a backup GK and a young left-footed CB. Sell Kalimuendo, Ndoye, McAtee, Bakwa, Savona, Richards, John Victor. Loan out Abbott, Bindon and Moreira. Jesus can cover CF in case of injuries.

Sels, new, Benda
Diomande, Milenkovic, Murillo, Jair, Morato, new
Williams, Aina, new, Netz
new, Sangare, Schlager, Dominguez, Yates
MGW, new, Jesus, CHO, Hutchinson
new, Wood

Keep Ndoye and McAtee and use Yates/Aina as 6th choice CB (he regularly played midfielders or full backs in his back 3 at Palace).

Diomande, Milenkovic, Murillo, Jair, new
