Current state of the squad

I'm wondering how the 25 man squad will align with Cooper's training model, which he recently said works on a basis of 20 first team players and was used as justification for bumping Lolley down to the U23s... Do 5 players get a day off?
More will go. Depending on our remaining business, expect a few players to leave.. a few we wouldn't expect as well.

He'll fill the slots as a technical exercise but given the amount of you players we have it'll be a struggle to get there anyway.

This season we have 9 subs on the bench, don't we? That's 20 players lined up every week. 25 man squad needed for that level of manpower, surely?

Having 9 on the bench and using 5 just means that it's easier to rotate or keep players fresh (for those in Europe and deep in cups etc).

For us, we may want good cup runs but even if we get them that'll probably only mean that we are playing the same amount of games as we did in the league only last season.

When we get injuries we'll be able to fill the 9 subs spots with youth if needed rather that look like wazzocks so if Cooper wants a 20 man squad, that's what he'll do. I have no idea whether that's a good idea or not, by the way.

Think it's going to get used this season as there are more subs allowed. Also Cooper seems to like good characters being in the squad supporting things, as we saw last year with Cafu, Silva, Bong...

Looking at the squad already we have

3 X Keepers
6 CB (including Mbe Soh who might get a loan towards the end of the window possibly)
1 RWB
2 LWB
5 CM (including Cafu & Ojeda)
4 FW (including Mighten and not Taylor)

That's already got the squad at 21...

Now maybe CM gets an upgrade and then players there get sold/loaned (Cafu/Ojeda)

Plus 1 FW incoming and maybe a loan for Mighten

Still leaves room for 2/3 solid signings

Assuming Laryea, Ioannou, Silva, Da Costa and Taylor are not involved that's still room for a few more players to fill out the squad.

For clarification, I'm sure that we will fill our 25 men - it would be madness not to - and I'm sure we will need them.

My question was more about, with Cooper's training methodology now having been stated as using 20 players - what do we do to keep the 'other 5' involved, fit, motivated, up to speed with the gameplan etc...does Cooper's method need to change? Or do we give the five least likely to be involved in the upcoming game some time off, send them to train with the U23s, send them to train on their own...etc...

Lingard and Dennis would be good for a club in our position. I would still want a replacement for Yates and a backup AMC. The backup AMC could be loanee no problem.

Squad looking good anyway and we could make do with Yates and reassess in January. Are any of new player set piece specialists? Because we are missing that at the moment.

Why are you talking like Yates is a liability?

He is as likely to make the step up as anybody else in the squad.

I dont see it personally but appreciate if others do. His general play isnt good enough but if he matches his 10 goals from last season than fair play but I dont see it. Happy to be proven wrong Id obviously rather he stepped up than we spend money but I dont think it will happen.

I suppose you'd have sold Yates to the Sadpies back in the day. You don't have to be the greatest player to have a significantly positive affect on a football match, Yates does that and I've no doubt will continue to do so.

Last season he scored 10 goals a massive contribution but I didnt think he was amazing general play wise but deserved to be in the team as everyone did. I dont think he will replicate the goals and on top of his technical play I would want him replaced. However happy to be proven obviously and want him to be amazing just dont get the vibes.

I mean, statistically speaking, he was actually the best Midfielder in the Championship last season...(Not my words or analysis)

Who Is the Best All-Rounded Central Midfielder in the Championship?

You may think this decision may be the hardest one yet however, this is actually an easier pick as the hard work has already been done as we deep-dived into all sorts of metrics to get to our final 2. We came across so many great central midfielders however, Ryan Yates is the clear winner here.

The 24-year-old not only ranked high in the attacking metrics, but he was also appearing in the defensive metrics. An example of this was the aerial duels won per 90, as he was ranked first on this.

If you go purely by data, Ryan Yates is the ideal box-to-box midfielder and is not only able to contribute to his team’s attacking phase, but he can also come back and make an impact, as seen in his interception rate. After playing a vital role in Nottingham Forest’s promotion, he’ll be looking to continue his development under Steve Cooper as Forest look to survive relegation in their first top-flight campaign since 1998/99.

I've not been wrong about many players over recent years but I'm happy to say Yatesy made me look like a right cock. The jury is out whether he will make the step up, but if there's one lad that has the willingness and intelligence to do so it's this lad.

Same. At the start of last season I thought he was a squad player at best, or perhaps League One standard. By the end of the season, he was one of the first names of my preferred starting XI and a candidate for Player of the Season.

I am certainly not making the mistake of writing Yates off again. He's constantly improving and has a real desire to learn and do well for the club.

I mean we lined up with a two man midfield and competed against three men on numerous occasions last year, often winning the midfield battle. His tenacity to get stuck in and break up play, and then get himself on the edge of the opposition box on the counter is a major reason why Forest were so good both at the back and the counter. Yates was up there for POTS for me, both in terms of individual contribution and impact on the overall side.

Apart from that though, it was just his 10 goals yeah.

Misses the champ
If Lingard gets signed then our first XI looks pretty good:

Henderson
McKenna, Niakhate, Worrall
Toffolo Yates, O'Brien, Williams
Lingard
Awoniyi, Johnson

Just need more attacking/midfield depth I'd say 1 CM, 1 AM and 1 ST and that's us done. Although I'd quite like someone like Larsson to get a look in as the backup AM

What are we missing now, then?

I make it a central midfielder, a winger, and a back-up striker. Possibly a LWB depending on Richards' injury.

Yeah I have the same, RWB option if Laryea does go, unless Biancone becomes that and we keep Mbe Soh around as CB backup. If we are pushing for Cornet we pretty much tick LWB backup, winger and striker off in one go, then a big marquee midfielder and keep that second Premier League loan spot open to see if any really good opportunities pop up towards the end of the window.

Another top quality central midfielder for me. Can't rely on Yates and O'Brien all season.

That's it really. Maybe use a couple of loan spots for backup AM/forward or a winger if we want to shift to 4231.

I think we're almost there.

Rzar

From the Athletic we are still looking at MGW & want to add a CM, striker & wingback/winger.

To be honest I think if we bring Cornet in, his versatility to cover pretty much all those positions apart from CM could be useful.

Ashley

Steve Chettle
I think we'll bring in someone like Cornet or Moreno to cover both LWB and left wing (once Richards is back from the dead).

The Athletic article says "at least one more central midfielder"; I'm kind of hoping for two. Want to make sure we have good options beyond Yates and O'Brien.

Add another striker on top of the above and I reckon we are good to go.
