what did everyone think about coles performance at shef wed?
After being one of his biggest critics over the first few games i thought he was much improved on tues night? he still looks lazy but all our good play ran though him and he looked quite strong on the ball and made some good chances? can he still do a job or is he past it???????

He may have improved but he was still crap. Doesn't move and he gave the ball away on way too many occassions.

Get him out! He thinks he is bigger than this club and I cannot stand it. He was again poor on tuesday night and Tyson yet again was doing the running of 2 players.

He played quite well on Tuesday I though, sure he wasn't brilliant but he held up play as well as playing some intelligent balls, most notably in the second half. He wasn't as effective in the first half but that was more down to everyone else not being on the same wavelength.

He's 36 (or at least reported to be around that age) and hasn't got the legs to chase after the ball as though is life depended on it...and even when he was at his peak his game wasn't about that anyway. You don't have to be incredibly industrious to be regarded as an asset to the strikeforce. Admittedly there are occasions where you need two hardworking strikers up front but Cole's approach is just as effective and I felt his influence and intelligent passing played a big park in making us look a decent attacking force against Wednesday.

He hardly gave the ball away once  Even if he did lose the ball say, 5 times - he found a Forest player about 20 times. His passing was spot on.

Yeah, he didn't run around like a madman like Tyson, but he was far more effective because his movement found him space and time on the ball, and that was often where our attacks came from.

people said the same about clough and sherringham , no one ever notices the holding up the movement off the ball etc only goals luckily edward scored 20+

I'd leave Tyson on the bench & play Cole alongside Earnie.(Until Garner is fit at least)

you cant drop tyson he chases everything down like earnie does but his pace alone is hopefully worthat least a goal if he gets the service

Tyson has the touch of a lampost (to pinch someone elses term :D) Whilst he isn't being protected by referees - he is best played as an impact player IMHO

Im with you there fella. I thought Cole had a good 2nd half at Sheffield. He was very close to scoring a few goals. I thought his control and passing was excellent, far better than any other striker we have. I think he will prove to be a good signing givena run in the team. He has suffered so far because he missed pre-season with injury and needs to build up his match fitness.

I think Tyson needs to start showing some promise in this league as I dont think he has risen to the challenge that well so far this season. I cant fault his running and effort but I think he is lightweight and gets muscled off the ball far too easy.

To be fair to Tyson, how often, when his touch is good (enough) and he gets past a player, is he actually allowed to then cross or shoot compared to being brought down? Practically never so far this season!

Cole was at the heart of the majority of our good play on Tuesday.

The problem was getting enough players around him to help him pick his passes. In the first half there was only Tyson and very occasionally, Cohen who got up to support him. In the second half when we pushed men forward (and kept the ball on the deck) he was able to link up and get us going.

Cole was never a 'runner' when he was at Man Utd. He has always been an intelligent player, and someone who can create opportunities with the ball at his feet.

He's strong and can put the ball in the net.

For all the running Tyson does, he's hardly streets ahead of Cole in the league scorers chart.

Cole will come good, I have no doubt about that.

Think of him as a less petulant, more honest, better skilled Grant Holt.

Firstly, his passing was not spot on.
Secondly, why is the only option running like a 'madman'? Why can;t he run like a sane man who's just trying very hard.
Thirdly, effective is certainly not a word I'd use to describe any of his performances in a Reds shirt apart from the 2nd half at Sheff Weds, to an extent. I'm hoping to see more of that. If Cole can be bothered.

I'd agree Cole has good technique and great pedigree. And no one's expecting him to play like Tyson. The fact is that he hasn't put the ball in the net. In fact he's created very few opportunites in any of the games he's played. He's not been a threat.

So if he's not scoring goals, he's not running, and he's not providing a threat, what has Andy Cole actually been doing for us thus far? His performances, and attitude, have warranted criticism.

Matt, you're talking out your backside mate.

Cole is still getting back to full MATCH fitness. He hasn't had a pre-season and Tuesday night was his first competitive 90 minutes in a Forest shirt.

Why do you think the Sheffield Wednesday game was his best yet? I'll answer it for you, it's because he's closer to full MATCH fitness!

Cole will bag a few goals for us, but judging by how Calderwood utilised Cole he will be more of a playmaker rather than the man to play off the last defender how he did when he scored bucket loads of goals for Newcastle and Man Utd.

When he received a pass to feet he oozed class, you could tell he hasn't lost the touch and vision

Because that's not his game, it never has been his game and chances are it never will be either.

He was at the centre of near enough all our good play against Wednesday and was certainly more effective than Tyson who ran himself into the ground.

Running's not his game? What? He's an athlete, why can't he run? Because he's always refused to and will continue to do so? That's madness!

I agree he was at the centre of a lot of nice link up play in the second half (though he did mis-place a number of simple passes), and of course he must have great vision and a good touch to have played at the top level, and I'm hoping that he's been anonymous in his games so far purely because of match fitness.

I'll continue to get behind him and hope he comes good. A bit more effort and a few goals would not go amiss.

Oh come on, you're being silly now. Of course he runs, not as much as someone like Tyson of course but he hardly stands still.

There is a middle ground between two extremes and that's roughly where Cole fits in in terms of work rate.

There is certainly middle ground! And that's where I want Cole to be.

My chart looks something like this:

Lazy - Andrew Cole- Middle ground - Nathan Tyson - "Madman"

Feed the Cole and he will score.. Starve him and he wont.... We don't play with wingers, we seem to have no one apart from McGugan who can actually create a chance for the strikers... Smacks of incompetance from other areas to me.
