Our only player that didn't look overwhelmed yesterday was Colback, that should tell you everything you need to know - and will probably be why Cook will go back in when he's fit too.

Interestingly I thought LO'B was much the better of the 2. Better engine, read the game better, played the only good pass to set up Lingurd and was the only one who carried the ball 10/20 yards now n then.

I thought Colback struggled myself. Didn’t really get near anybody. O Brien slightly better. But they were outnumbered, an impossible task.

Colbacks real downfall, especially when playing in the middle is he reacts to everything instead of anticipating it and being in the right position. He always has done in fairness. Just looks so much worse at this level.

Simply put, without sentiment, he's just not good enough. Hes hardly been used in CM even in the championship in over a season anyway.. Obrien is slightly better but not by much at this stage. We need far more athlitism and stregth in that pairing and to me it was blatently obvious from pre season.

We can keep harping on about sentiment, and accusing anyone of saying they arent up to it of being a doom monger or a panicker etc but it wont change anything, they just arent. Obrien may work alongside another but im not convinced yet. Colback in ANY midfield combination will result in tears. The sooner this is addressed, the sooner we'll improve.

Hopefully Mangala starts next week and hopefully Yates is next to him, but lets just drop the idea that Colback is up to the job.

I'm not sure I've read anyone ever say Colback should be starting week in/week out in the PL, he's just all we had unless you were going to throw Mangala in there, which for whatever reason we didn't. He'll be a useful squad player though this year, and he did ok yesterday. I saw enough in the Valencia game never to want to see him and OBrien as the central pairing again.

Colback is colback , he won't lack effort, he is just distinctly average, against superior opponents, he'll chase shadows and gives away cheap fouls.

At first I thought that the tweet meant Forest were definitely linked/interested, although I'm wondering whether it's just more of a rumour or even an idea by the person who posted it.

It might seem surprising even, since I have been calling more for a ball player than a DM as priority in midfield, but to be honest on a football level it makes sense to me too, as I can see that he'd help protect the defence but at the same time he's actually pretty useful on the ball, and it's only a quick highlight video but this makes it seem clear he can still run well and move enough for sure (whether or not he'd get forwards as much as he might have back in his West Ham time, but that's probably not what his role would entail at Forest anyway right now)
It's actually when he's bringing the ball past players that his turn of pace is shown best on there probably. Anyway, for free signing him wouldn't necessarily preclude still getting a Garner or someone like that too (the one good thing about missing the McAtee loan opportunity might be that we could still use an obligation to buy Garner that could be conditional on staying in the league...albeit maybe we'd want to buy him for the Championship again if it came to it anyway - the only thing is people seem to be saying Garner's price could up there near MGWs recently?), and certainly shouldn't cut into the budget for spending elsewhere (attacking midfield and maybe striker if we can't loan a good option).

At least having him as an option/alternative to Yates would seem a positive. Maybe he could even play in a midfield 3 with two central attacking midfielders too in theory (not saying that's seeming a likely formation for Forest right now, although you never know if we did add Gibbs-White or someone like that to Lingard and wanted to play a 4-3-3 type shape at any point, or maybe a positive 3-5-2). He'd be useful for either a 4-2-3-1 or the 3-4-1-2 type formations we've been playing anyway I think.

However what I'd have concerns about (and it's not really anything to do with playing football, but nevertheless), would be this and what exactly he was meaning by calling him a "real man" - I shouldn't make a pun possibly, but I guess he's not prejudiced against Gueyes anyway!
I know Gueye (the player going back to Everton apparently isn't it?) and Kouyate weren't physically responsible for this, but still....
I don't remember ever noticing he seemed a dirty player or whatever on the pitch, but yeah I'm not sure about his attitudes off it (not that I want to say anymore about that or get into discussion about it, but I thought maybe I should mention it anyway - I guess sooner or later somebody would have done). I think Vieira wasn't sure at first whether there was anything in it (including what Gueye intended by missing the game) but made some supportive comments about inclusivity/tolerance etc in general, from other stuff I read about it (not quite sure on what pages now).

I’m assuming this link is extremely BUPA but still felt it’s worth posting.

It's from another Wayne Veysey article, so we safely assume that he's not signing:

Pete O'Rourke posting it too, looks to be more fuel to the fire if nothing else

Also works for the same outlet as Veysey nowadays, and has been known to tweet based on his articles. For that reason he is no longer the reliable source he once was unfortunately.

It's a sensible signing on a free. Bit like the Lingard thing, lots of upside potential for reasonably low outlay.

If I was being greedy I'd want an even more dominant CM though.

Didn't realise that, his strike rate seems pretty good but he must delete the tweets proven to be bs after the event.

Perhaps. I've seen him get stuff right still, but some stuff wrong (mostly the Veysey stuff IIRC) too. I hope they are right on this occasion though, as I think Kouyate would be a good signing.

Warming up to the idea of this guy now, still made 27 starts in the league for Palace last season (Likely would've been more had he not gone to AFCON) and anchored them to some big wins. Palace supporters wanted him to re-sign but apparently he wants a 2 year contract and they only offer 1 year deals to over 30s as a rule. Adds a lot of much needed physical presence to the midfield. Clearly lacking technically but if we can put him next to Mangala and someone like Aouar/MGW/Lingard, with Williams down the right and another ball carrying LWB on the other side hopefully his deficiencies wont be a big hindrance.

We have little squad depth.

For me we can't turn our nose up at players like this until we are in a position where we have depth.
