See, I disagree. I can absolutely see a role in the squad for him, especially off the bench late in games when the side needs extra bodies in midfield to close out tight games.

We have Yates, Mangala, OBrien and Colback! I dont think hes better than them. However I understand the role you have him doing.

As much as I like Cafu and Colback, you wouldn't really want them playing much in the Premier League.

We need 4 decent midfielders ideally, with Mangala due to sign we currently have 3 (Mangala, Yates, O'Brien) so are 1 midfielder light still IMO.

I absolutely love Cafu. Seeing him wheeling away yesterday and pumping the sky even in a friendly tells you what it means to him. You know he'll leave absolutely everything out on the pitch every time. I'll never forget the part he's played for us

I disagree with Colback. Think he’s performed very well and very consistently in every role we’ve asked of him. I can see him starting in CM against Newcastle.

I think Cafu will have a part to play throughout the season, and might even suit the level above more than the one below... Might.

He's an interesting one - he's very technically gifted, can do the hard stuff easily but all too often makes a mess of the simple stuff. I'd love to see him with some more technical types around him - Thet could dance around playing one touch before eventually losing possession with a 10 yard pass.

I like Colback, and would keep him around for his experience and versatility. But I think he should be 5th choice CM rather than in the main 4 (who will be the ones playing for us regularly).

Let me explain my thinking a bit on Colback Ashley-given we are less than 2 weeks to Newcastle, my guess (knowing how Coops has operated in the past) is that we will go with O'Brien and Colback because Yates won't be available (might be wrong on that but hes been out for a fair while and got a knock again yesterday and as a result I think will be "phased back in"), Cafu isn't anywhere near good enough (IMO), and the new Stuttgart signing has barely had time to unpack his bag at the hotel.
Colback is tenacious, experienced and pretty shrewd if a little limited with the ball but I don't think he will let us down. As the season settles I would see his involvement as mainly from the bench as the others settle in, but for now given the circumstances I think he'll start.

You are most likely right that Colback will start against Newcastle should Yates not be fit. But I'll be surprised if he is part of the main 4 going forwards (particularly as it looks like we are still looking at signing another midfielder after Mangala, if rumours today are to be believed).

If that comes to pass you are probably right.
I'm generally not over-sentimental about moving on from players, but I do think Colback was a massive and relatively unsung part of our progress last year-one of those "bits and pieces" players who isn't brilliant at anything but solidly does the basics to a consistent level game after game. As such I think hes got a role to play, particularly if things get hard for us...

His experience and versatility will have its uses for sure. I think he'll be a good figure for the younger lads in midfield to learn from, and will probably be useful to bring off the bench to help see out games and such. I'd be happy to keep him around still.

Given his history there, I suspect Jack Colback will be absolutely chomping at the bit to feature against Newcastle.

Two assists and overall good stats, as a no 10 no less. You don't need Scarpa; let us have him (although in the end I think we will have to settle with Cafú, unless he stays there as a dressing room player).
