[BUPA] William Carvalho

Should've added an extra caveat that just because we saw him play a certain way last night doesn't mean he isn't capable of playing more to our style. But the lack of speed in his general game does stick out.
Yeah when he plays for Portugal he never strikes me as athletic, but composed and steady. I may be way out, but the numbers being mentioned (€5m) make me think he is viewed as a different option for Cooper, rather than a key target with a view to starting every game.

I don’t think Mangala and Carvalho will be our last pieces at CM

He is by far the most accomplished player we've been linked with. Thankfully, being as fast as Usain Bolt isn't a prerequisite for EVERY position. He is a deep lying play maker who is excellent at threading through forward balls. I love Colback but as a comparison it's filet mignon versus a spam sandwich

He will also cost approx 20 million cheaper than the German and Ivory Coast lads.

There is absolutely no way we should be spending £20m on this guy. Nobody is saying he needs to be Olympic speed, you're twisting the context of what has been said, we are saying is his extremely slow, there is a difference. Again it's only based upon what was seen last night but nobody watching that game would have suggested Colback is any worse in what he does.

Given the choice of a deep lying playmaker I'd take Garner at this point

£20m cheaper. Not £20m.

One year left on his contract and 30 years of age. £5m has been mooted.

Who suggested spending 20 million on him? We've bid 5 million Euros at this point.

I didn't watch the game yesterday but judging a player who is angling for a move away on a 60 min friendly is a little much.

The facts are that he has been one of the top performing midfielders in Europe for his position the past 5 years. I believe he's a brilliant player and would add loads to our squad.

Came to England as William, in 1066.

William is French name withn Germanic roots.
See, this is where things get complicated with so much knowledge. He actually comes from Angola, a Portuguese colony so he's Prortuguese African, no Germanic or French connections at all.

So to me his name spelt in that way is English, Anglicised in 1066 by the English (being Anglo-Saxon myself, I'm generously allowing the English to claim the credit).

He shall still be Bill, although I'm sure someone will now tell me why someone named William is a Bill!

In Spain, the V letter is sounded like the B sound. And vice versa. For example, the Spanish telecoms giant Movistar is pronounced Moby-star.

So, in the old days, when Wilhem was really still a Vilhelm, the Spanish called him Bilhelm.

Thus, William, when shortened to Bill, is a Spanish-inspired transfiguration of the name.

My apologies I misread the £20m part as I'm somewhat on the fly now.

I did say that this was purely based off what I saw last night. There's a contradiction in what you say though, because if he was one of the top performing midfielders in Europe then we wouldn't be getting him for £5m either.

To make it clear again i know this is just based upon what I saw last night but I don't see how he fits into our system, he was very slow and if I was asked to make a decision for someone who'll dictate play from a deeper position it would be Garner I'd take.

He's a very good player, and not every player needs to be super quick. It's a shame he's going to Lyon as I thought he'd be a top signing for us.

Lyon is lovely, went for the Womens World Cup and had a good few days there - as well as watching the final. Cracking stadium

Still, it's no Nottingham or City Ground eh? :)

Don't think you could get away with him in a 2 man central midfield, assuming we're playing the same system as last season the minimum we need is a CM pairing who can cover a LOT of ground. We basically require 2 players/engines who are capable of doing a 3 man job

Carvalho is a good player but I struggle to see how we'd get the best out of him. We can't afford to carry a plodder at CM no matter how creative he can be from deep. We need someone like Garner who's capable of being the deep playmaker while also having the engine and young legs to cover every inch of grass

Think you've hit the nail on the head there. Just doesn't feel like he'd have been a good fit here at all, despite his obvious quality. We'd almost certainly have to change our system to accommodate him.

Betis certainly getting the better end of that deal.

Pretty much how I saw it and I agree with you on the pressing, he closed down when the player was in close proximity but he certainly didn't play a pressing game and that's because of his deep position. Again like you I'm not sure where he fits.

I don't think Forest are a pressing side. The attacking unit infrequently attempts it when there's man advantage potential (usually when we've just lost the ball) but most of the time we retreat, get back into position and form a low block which then allows us to use the pace out wide/up top to counter.

We might be more compact this year too given the step up in opposition.
