This is obviously just based upon 60 mins but overall from what I saw he's tidy enough but nothing to rave about. He's very much a deep lying midfielder and sits in right in front of the defence, he does get about but he's extremely slow. He offers nothing more than what Jack Colback can do for us and I'd be surprised if Cooper thinks he's something we need. I'd be disappointed if we spent money on him at 29 years of age when there's nothing that stands out to say he's going to give us any type of edge in midfield

I know you've just seen him play in person so I respect your assesment and that you're saying at as you saw it, but comparing a player who was a mainstay in a team that finished 5th in LaLiga, has Champions League experience and 73 caps for Portugal to Jack Colback seems a bit of a stretch. It was a friendly in Chesterfield after all.

The way Betis play means they effectively leave a back 2 when in possession so his role is to sit deep in front of them and protect. I get why they have him and he's an important if unspectacular cog in that machine. We don't play that system or way so I really don't see how he'd fit into our midfield. Colback can do that protecting role drifting from side to side and he's just as capable on the ball.

I genuinely can't see what he would bring to us that we don't already have in Colback

Seems to be the first player we've been this heavily linked with that a few people are genuinely unsure about. Not sensing as much optimism as there was for the other signings. At least on here anyway.

A later French modernisation of Willame.

It's a lovely name but also has the same roots. William came first, in both France and England.
But Wilhelm came first (ooh matron).

The French took it from the Germans (as Willame) and gave it to the English. They now have Guillaume. Wilhelm was in use in Old English before the Norman conquest and then William replaced it and became (a lot) more popular.

'William is a French name' seems like an arbitrary stop along a lineage which started with Wilhelm.

from the clips seen of him, this guy plays forward passes and dominate midfield , colback first instinct is passing back and doesn't really dominate , tackles sure but never imposing , this guy looks and plays like a human barrier in the middle 'you shall not pass'. vastly experienced and if reports of 5 million is true , at 30 , he still can do the job for a few more years.

like i said with Lingard, it’s because he’s not younger than 23 and/or not from the Bundesliga.

Bill is a class player that has so much experience, to get him at the rumored price would be amazing. we can’t only have a team of youngsters, the price for a kid that does what Bill does would be outrageous, like MGW level.

The same type of analytical thinking can be put forward with older players as well, where you weigh their price and performance as well as questioning their ability to continue their career at a high level. similar to how wolves brought Moutinho in when they got promoted.

would be an extremely solid player if it happens.

Absolutely nothing to do with any of what you put mate. I watched him last night and based it purely off what I saw. The caveat is I only saw 60 mins of him and it was just a psf and obviously any real assessment needs to be made over multiple games.

For what it's worth I thought he looked alright but nothing special too, although it is worth keeping in mind that was only his second pre-season run out. I'd be surprised if he played in a 2 man midfield, he's not fast and barely got over the halfway line for most of the match, I saw someone on Twitter say he was intense in his pressing and I thought the exact opposite he didn't press anyone at all, certainly isn't one who is gonna go hunting for the ball and in the team to destroy, like you say he's a deep lying playmaker really and his passing is pretty good, I can see BJ, Awoniyi etc. enjoying the balls in behind from deep he's clearly capable of. If Coops is building towards even quicker counter attacking stuff (which the signings we've made so far suggest) I'm not sure where Carvalho fits, he seems to be a player who likes to take his time.

I seem to remember John Bostock & Bouchalakis having real quality but their lack of pace ensured they didn't make it.

Obviously this lad is a level above.

Also, players like Tom Huddlestone lacked pace, seemingly similar style to William and had a decent career in the top flight.

Should've added an extra caveat that just because we saw him play a certain way last night doesn't mean he isn't capable of playing more to our style. But the lack of speed in his general game does stick out.

Pretty much how I saw it and I agree with you on the pressing, he closed down when the player was in close proximity but he certainly didn't play a pressing game and that's because of his deep position. Again like you I'm not sure where he fits.

The lack of pace does worry me here. Obviously the quality with Portugal caps can’t be denied. Would rather have that stach lad looking at his size, movement and age.

As Heff mentioned his lack of pace was very apparent. His style and role in that system probably suits the Spanish game where the tempo is usually, slow, slow, quick, quick, slow

5 mill plus add ons for him is amazing in my opinion however just like the rbs last season do we really need another defensive midfielder?

What I think we really need is James Garner who will get 10 plus contributions in the middle of the park.

I would liken Carvalho to someone like Rodri but obviously not as good.
