I don't know how you go from a player that in his first 3 Prem seasons was 8/3, 5/11 and 11/5 for goals/assists to someone that looks like they've never played professional football.

I have the strangest feeling we're going to end up loaning him back in January and he'll find his form again.
 
Yet another player (see Brereton and Burke) that everyone has wanted back over the last few years, and eventually the five stages of relationship breakdown - get to realisation, that he were shite anyway. In living memory only Andy Reid returning has been brilliant and even then he was dogged with injuries and "sick" days

I was buzzing when we got Jenas and Prutton back but you realise they aren’t the same player that left. Like you say, not many comeback and perform to the level we remembered. Probably put Des Walker alongside Reid in the ‘worth it’ column. I can’t remember how Dawson did when he returned so he could be another.

Dawson wasn't bad but to be fair despite having glandular fever and being slightly below the insane level he was when he first came in, the player that left wasn't far away from the England squad so he was never going to back at that level. That was in the days of Terry, Ferdinand, Campbell, King, Carragher etc too.

Also it must be noted that he was partnered at times with Michael Hefele when he came back which I wouldnt wish on anyone as he makes me look nimble and I'm in my 40s and not played football for at least 6 years.

He was very unlucky with that much competition at centre back but like you say, meant his level was sky high when he left.

I forgot all about Hefele, probably for the best!

Hodge, and also Birtles from an earlier era.
 
I dont know how many players we have sold and bought again but a list of Birtles, Bowyer, Hodge, Walker, Reid and Dawson isnt too shabby.
 
Yes, and most of those who did come back weren't as good in their second spells. Recently the best exception to that was probably Reid but even then he ended up not played at all by Cotterill and then it wasn't that long until he basically ended up injured. Dawson was fine and brought a lot of experience to the side but likewise struggled with injuries and also not being an automatic choice at that time. I'm not sure how well we can compare Walker because when he came back we were in the championship and before he left we were in the PL, and he was also much older and IIRC had not had a club the season before, but he still played a part in a decent enough side for a couple of years.

I've always said and still stand by it that I'd have definitely had Ben Osborn back. He'd have been a much better backup sub than players like Origi, Bentner, Lingard, etc.

The thing that people don't appreciate is that they they think of players like Ben Osborn coming back as in he's got to be a brilliant Premiership player and start every week, which isn't the case. What I wanted him back for was the fact that he's so versatile and so dependable that in one player you have someone who fills numerous sub/cup positions. So then the rest of the bench can be freed up significantly to have tactical sub positions as opposed to like-for-like sub positions that are just there for cover.

He's past his prime now and I don't think he's up to the job at this standard, but the early years that we were first in the Prem, I'd definitely had Osborne over of the players that we got instead such as Scarpa.
