Ben Osborn Appreciation Thread

Hate these scenarios where ex players apparently excel at other clubs & we immediately jump in with paralells on their time here.

Bennys been under Wilder for a while now, he's got a better manager than he's ever had here, he's got better players around him, he's being played in the correct position & so on.

Totally different set of circumstances 7 much more condusive platform for the player to succeed. I think you could put him back in our side today & he'd look the same player he did in a Forest shirt.

A good one then.

A good one then.

We rarely played him in his preferred position here, preferring to use him as a utility player. So you wouldn't want to get too forensic.

You'd have to say he was a good player given he never looked out of place in any position you put him.

What Sheff Utd have done is identify his best position to best nullify his weakness, we didnt do that.

Not only that but he has - as is common with Wilder - had to wait a long time for his opportunity in the team. Benny isn't a bad player technically, always looks to improve, is intelligent, and works hard so you can guarantee he will be taking this chance with both hands.

If you had to say to me "which 1 easy thing to change would see you already in the playoffs this season?" I'd say not selling Benny/renewing his contract.

Think he'd have been WAY more use and better cover in various areas than all the dross we've loaned, Jenks, or Da Costa so far. Esp with Sab's grafting approach.

Yeah he may have wanted to go, but at least renew his contract and get a better price for him, so you can sign better in Jan.

Wasn't it reported at the time that he didn't want to sign a new deal though? That's why Forest reluctantly let him go with a year of his deal left.

Yep, he'd told the club he wasn't going to sign a new deal, which is totally fair considering a Prem club wanted him, and it meant we had the opportunity to get a decent fee for him too.

At the time yes, but that's why you extend his contract well before it's down to it's final year. Which we should have.

As the old saying goes, „it takes two to tango“.

The player wanted a new challenge, hence running down his contract.

There was an offer, but he preferred to seek something new. And absolutely no issue with that, he’d given Forest some sterling service, and the chance for him to play at the highest level is something you cannot deny a player.

Forest wanted to keep him, but he had made it clear he wanted to go, so Forest, again correctly, sold him before he could leave on a Bosman.

Welcome to modern football.

Don't disagree mate, but I've heard that Benny's 2016 renewal was still significantly WAY less than what Britt was earning when he was here.

Certainly I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that another increased renewal around 2018 wouldn't have at least made him think twice, and also got us a few more quid if he did go.

Rumours & speculation granted.

Where's me hammer?
Why would a utility players wages be anywhere near a strikers?

Who could possibly have predicted that?

Tell you the player who I thought would have made it too for the same reasons as Benny (had injuries been kind), and that's Cohen.

There's a reason managers like Wilder & MON value attitude so highly, this shows why, and Cohen defo had that in him.

Yates does too. Defo needs time to learn his trade more (what did Benny have before the Prem, 5 years?) but he's another with the right stuff.

Always amazes me how folk discard such players for flakes like Semedo, who shit out the second a ripple in the waters appear.

Even in a thread relating to Benny you have to have yet another go at Carvalho.
Is it really necessary?

The deal suited all parties. Osborn wasn't going to hang about here with offers from the Premier League incoming so we got a decent fee for him considering length of contract left. I also think he fits better into Wilder's system than ours.

Easy to have a go at the club but that £3m could have bought us Ribeiro, Sow and Brice.
