Not convinced it'll make a difference tbh.

If they're sanctioning the sale, then you'd think they have a plan for a replacement - and that the plan won't be a player they've already written off.
Knowing the Geordies they’d offer him back with £20 m for Anderson. Gazza bringing a 6 pack, some chicken nuggets and a fishing rod

With Gordon seemingly about to join Barcelona I think the chances of getting Elanga back have been reduced.

Opposite. It increases chances of Elanga leaving if they sell Gordon for big money because any FFP hit on Elanga is offset by the Gordon profit.

They clearly don't want to keep Elanga but might be struggling to realise a £20m or so loss if they can only sell at £30m. Gordon sale more than covers that.

Agreed, also think there could be a minor house clean at Newcastle, I reckon they’d be very happy for someone to bail them out of that Elanga deal/contract.

I think Newcastle are going to be OK money wise after selling Isak last summer, they may want rid of Elanga but they wouldn't be desperate like when we signed Anderson.

Wissa, Woltemade, Elanga, Ramsey, Thiaw and Ramsdale must add to £250m or so. They also booked the £35m on the Anderson transfer last year, which they can't do this year.

Disclaimer: I've not looked at their finances in depth whatsoever. I may be miles out here thinking they might be fairly close to the FFP limit.

They got plenty of money back too for the likes of Isak so had a net transfer spend of £141m (don't know if they did anything in January and whether that's included or not). They also had the boost of champions league money and could lose about £130m and still meet PSR so I'd be shocked if they were that close to the limit.

I don't think he'd be as effective under VP. What makes Elanga so dangerous is his pace. Nuno set us up to sit back and then hit the opposition with a lightning fast counter attack. That is why Elanga was so devastating for us at times. We don't really play like that now though.

As Howe has found out, he's nowhere near as effective in a team already most of the way up the pitch. You can't outrun defenders if they are already back near their own box.

I'd love to see him back, but I don't think he'd fit as well as he did under Nuno. Could be wrong though.
Fully agree with this assessment

Eh, I don't think we're a possession based team still and I think when we are, it's because teams know we can have the ball with them back and we won't break them down. It's not just about the counter, if you've got someone like Elanga, you're likely going to have to commit not just a full back but also a centre back or a central midfielder to double up, which leaves space for others. The threat of the pace and him getting in is as much of a problem as the actual pace. That and the boy could take a set piece.

We aren't a possession based team but we are much closer to being one, and play far further up the pitch, than under Nuno.

As we've seen at Newcastle, once robbed of having vast amounts of the pitch to run into, he is far less effective and teams didn't need to double up on him because his primary weapon is taken away.

Here he'd still have opportunities to run, but they wouldn't be the focal point like it was under Nuno. I'd love to see him back but I don't think he'd anywhere as impactful as before.

We need a Doku or Semenyo type of winger, eg. a good old fashioned tricky one who can go past the defender and put in a cross or a shot.

Johnson and Elanga are kick and run types with through balls to run on to which suits the low block and counter style.

Hutchinson has shown he can beat his man but need to improve further, maybe with more experience will come more confidence too and he definitely needs to improve his goal output.

when the tactics demand more, well, Hutch is miles ahead of Elanga already even if he surely isn't a finished product yet.
Hutch has shown a few flashes but absolutely nothing that you could say Elanga couldn't do.

But remember when Hutch was up against last man James Miller and he turned back rather than drive at goal. Elanga is 1 on 1 with the keeper at that point.

Worth remembering even possession teams create counter-attacks.

Isn't Ross Wilson at Newcastle now? Surely he's astute enough to see that Fast Tony would be better off back here?
Fast Tony. Love it. Can see him in Bada Bing with a cigar and bandana on.

We've had a lot of times this season, especially before Wood came back) where Ndoye, CHO and Hutchinson (to a lesser extent), even Neco and Jesus at times, have been 1v1 and weren't confident to take the player on because they aren't quicker than them. Always felt like that's where we need someone with Elanga's pace. It often felt like every team in the league has that one player with blistering pace. The fact we've done fairly well without that, I think shows we've got bags of actual footballing abililty in the core of the side.

Watching that Elanga video of assists and goals took me back and I forgot some of his qualities, especially his link up play with Wood and MGW-outstanding at times. There are very few players who come back to any club and be a success. But he was quality for us, albeit in spells. Loved when he came more central and ran beyond Wood, added extra dimension. Torn on this one, suppose depends on price and also got to consider what plan is formation and tactics and need signings to be aligned.

Another thing to add (though maybe it's been mentioned already) but Elanga coming back after a torrid time in Newcastle and instantly welcomed and feeling better about things (back with Aina and CHO) could remind the rest of our players (particularly ones we want to keep) that there are risks going to a new club and you might end up at a club that hates you with negative vibes.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I wouldn't have him back. He was great for half a season under Nuno tactics but I'd hope we start moving towards players who have more about them than simply running quickly.

Opinions and all, but I'd say he was absolutely elite for half a season, and mostly pretty good (with some dips in form of course like any winger) for the remaining 1.5 seasons he was with us. His numbers for 23/24 were also very decent in a pretty poor team (5 goals 9 assists).

Why isn't this BUPA?

Because there aren't any rumours about Forest wanting to bring him back, there aren't any rumours about Newcastle wanting to sell him back to us, and there aren't any rumours about him wanting to come back. That's why.

It's just us fans discussing whether it would be a good idea to bring him back.
