BP posts record profits. Triple the amount from the same quarter last year.

In a time where people are skipping meals and freezing to death in their homes because it's so expensive, this is absolutely disgusting.

Not that I am sticking up for the big corporations but I am sure I read they lost something like $20billion through COVID, but that obviously doesn't have the same clout news wise as making money.

On the point about drinking, Brynn brings up a good point about the home bar/shed craze. Quite a few of the regulars down where I used to drink built home bars during COVID, so they just use those and invite their friends round. You don't get the same social aspect but it is a decent bit cheaper.

It’s also like the predictable outcry when drug companies make profits out of medication or indeed vaccines.
People have no idea the colossal costs of bringing a drug from its initial stages to market. Ultimately the development of drugs is a capitalist endeavour (how many come from communist regimes?)

I’d like to see the evidence for that. Sure there is interplay between some aspects of university research work and companies like GSK, but by the same count those companies also tip money into supporting university departments and research streams.
I know for a fact that billions are staked by commercial companies into decade long development and research streams aimed at turning possible compounds into safe human treatments

Without being so bold in my assertion, research indicates that roughly half of total global investment in pharmaceutical R&D is public funding. The price for profiteers then taking-up research gains(?) - the transfer of intellectual property rights.
