A week in politics

Rampant inflation, huge national strikes, energy crisis, UK economy falling behind, Imperial measurements, Forest back in the top-flight.

If only we could also get the affordable housing on one person's average wage, but at least we got the return to the 70s that all the misty-eyed Gammons wanted!
I think they were hankering after the 1870s when we still had an empire and Britannia ruled the waves and all that

I've took the central heating out and put in a coal fire. Stripped out the shower and bought a tin bath. And that plastic double glazing can fuck right off there's nothing wrong with draughty old sash windows. If I could just find the starting handle to my Ford Anglia I could pop down the shops for some tripe and onions, non of that foreign muck. You lot are nothing but defeatist,s. Conscription would do some of you a world of good.

Just need a hot summer, White dogshit & pint pots with a handle and we've nailed it

No wonder the country is a mess, the useless fuckpig can't even hold a newspaper the right way round while posing for "look how busy I am keeping up with current events" photo

So Sunak keeps the triple lock on pensions two days before Tiverton by election.

What a coincidence.

I hope they get a stuffing in both today.

You are so cynical !
I hadn’t twigged as to the unquestionable link between the 2.

Pensioners are some of the richest and some of the poorest in society. You’d think there would be a way to means test this triple lock to make it more palatable.

This week the government have been adamant that workers can’t expect big wage price rises as it will push up costs and cause even more inflationary problems yet here we are doing exactly that for a huge core of their voters.

Anyway, what a mess at the moment!

Older voters tend to favour the Tories.

Ergo, the Tories aren’t going to piss off a large majority of their support by taking money away from them.

Fed up with it all to be honest. My parents don't need a 10% rise from their state pension, they've got absolutely plenty through fortunate DB scheme pensions and being in the right place at the right time when they got on the housing ladder. They never earned much in their working careers, both of them only just earning above the national average in the last 5-10 years before they retired, but this year they've built a shiny new extension on the house which cost six figures, which they could pay for in cash because they can't spend what they've got coming in fast enough. Most of the people they associate with are in very similar boats.

The state pension is shit, and for those living solely off that it is woeful so I don't begrudge inflation-linked rises as a minimum for those people, but there needs to be some sort of means testing, especially if the government insist that the people paying these rises in state pension, the people working now, get real terms pay cuts.

Land tax.
Property tax.
Reduction in income tax.

Stop making the working folk pay for absolutely everything when they will not get anywhere near the same amount of benefits that those not working have enjoyed throughout their lives. Fucking sick of it.

Exactly but how can you get away with spending a week saying pay rises will damage the economy so get over it and then announce this. Especially as in many cases these are some of the richest people in society who actually don’t need to get out and about for work, and many have bus passes etc…

Great post maxi. If everyone has to shoulder the burden then fair enough. Some pensioners are horrendously poor. But many are in a great position. It isn’t black or white but it is so unjust that well off pensioners are gonna get such a rise while working families are hit struggling and are hit time and time.

Working class families don’t vote Tory.
