Nice to have a quality no.1 actually wear no.1 for the first time in ages.

Waiting for confirmation on Niakhaté’s number. He wore 19 for his previous club, but that’s already taken here (unless Silva moves on)z

Me too.

Quite considering getting him on the back of a new shirt (as long as it doesn’t have a shite Chinese gambling sponsor).

Fin Back is number 45 (confirmed by his Dad!) although that might change before the kickoff of the new season.

On this subject when I watched our 93/94 season review on YouTube I noticed Steve Stone often wears 6. As the right midfielder I'd have thought he would be 7. Suppose technically Collymore should have been 9 too...

Tiny, trivial detail perhaps but it annoyed my OCD.

Because Phillips wore 7. Forest have tended to have 4 as a centre back and 6 as a midfielder, although in the European days McGovern wore 4, with Burns and Lloyd wearing 5&6. I'm guessing Des Walker made it fashionable.

Anyway, I'm guessing Stan wanted to wear 10, which as a complete centre forward suited him. Trouble is, we played 4-5-1 so that meant Bohinen wearing 9 in midfield. Phillips as an international probably demanded wearing 7, so Stone as a youth player had to wear 6. Also, I'm not certain I'm remembering this right so could be wrong (I was 8-9 years old that season), but I think Phillips may have started on the right and Stone in the middle for the first couple of games before switching.

Then the next year with squad numbers, Woan took 14 (delusions of Cruyff perhaps), so Stone took 11 and Carl Tiler had 6. I'm guessing Bohinen wanted to keep 9. I've always assumed that the numbers had been sorted out before we signed Bryan Roy, which is why he took 22. Otherwise, he'd surely have had 9 or 11.

I am a squad numbers geek!

Alf-Inge Haaland had 18, as well.

My avatar is the match issue number 9 'Bohinen' shirt (that's what it was advertised as, but doesn't have the name on the back as was from 93/94 I think, and maybe it never used in a match I don't know or it might have been worn by Rosario even or something, even if maybe Bohinen would also take XL if he wanted a loose fit - the avatar is from the advert but I received it not long ago and there are a few others available in XL.

They are advertised with the 1994/95 player names according to squad numbers, but maybe it was a batch of XL shirts Forest had available for 93/94 or something. I assume they genuinely did belong to Forest though.

Anyway, yeah, I remember Stone did start alongside Webb in midfield (6 and 8) in 93/94, with Black and Woan in 7 and 11, and Phillips was bought and did initially play a game or two on the right wing wearing 7 (but maybe Clark had it in mind to put him in the middle as an anchor player and put Stone on the right and Black or Woan on the left when he bought Phillips).

When Collymore started playing it was in a 4-4-2 and in England in those days there wasn't such a distinction about who wore number 9 (Nigel Clough was maybe more like the number 10 in role - especially alongside a Chapman for example). Maybe Frank Clark gave Bohinen number 9 when we started using 5 in midfield, because he remembered that Nandor Hidegkuti used to wear it playing as 'deep lying centre forward' for Hungary, or maybe because Bobby Charlton used to wear it for Man United! Or maybe just because Collymore was established as number 10, and it was better to keep Bohinen in 9 when Glover or someone played too.

Clark said he initially thought about playing Roy as left winger and keeping 5 in midfield (or arguably 3 in attack, but maybe with Roy moreso than Stone), but Roy liked the idea of playing more freely from the middle and so he went with that. Cooper, Chettle and Tiler got 4, 5 and 6 for 1994/95 though when that season I don't think there was any plan to play 3 CBs, so Stone moved out of number 6 into number 11 (maybe because it was the only 1st choice number left and he was a sure starter for Clark by then, even though that's normally the left winger's number, not the right winger's one - Phillips kept number 7).

Funnily enough when Argentina gave Redondo number 5, or Brazil gave it to Mauro Silva or something (I think), it kind of fits with how formations used to be in the 2-3-5 era because it was 2 and 3 as 'full-backs' (full-time defenders it meant originally), and 4-5-6 as the half-back line with number 5 being like a DM mixed with deep-lying playmaker. English teams did give the centre half (as they still called it, but basically centre back) number 5 in the WM (3-2-3-2) era though and it does make sense if you have two centre backs that one wears 5 (whether the other has 4 like Des Walker, or 6, when McGovern used to wear 4). I remember Ronnie Whelan did wear 5 and somehow it seemed to suit him on the left of midfield, or in central midfield, but Liverpool went pretty 'weird' numbers wise considering they still basically played 4-4-2 around that time (Dalglish in 7 etc).

Good post.

On Brazil, traditionally Brazilian sides with a back four have always gone 2-3-5-6, with the centre backs being 3 and 5 and the left back wearing 6 (and this is true for Club as well as the Selecão).

Lee Sharp for Man U, an out and out winger in the early 90s, wore 5 for some reason. That always puzzled me.

Yeah, a lot of teams used to number the defence first from right to left, especially in South America I think, so that's how number 6 can end as the left back maybe (especially if number 5 was given to the anchor midfielder as per what I said before, then it'd be number 4 in the defence but same kind of theory). Branco maybe wore number 6 did he at left back for Brazil at one point, before Roberto Carlos?

Going back to Hungary, they used to have the defence wearing 2, 3 and 4 from right to left in the 50s I know (partly the 60s too possibly). Number 5 was therefore the 'right half' (and number 6 left half), who was also a deep-lying midfielder called Bozsik (one of their legendary players) - I've heard English commentators saying in their poshest voice (might have been Kenneth Wolstenholme) "that's the right half wearing 5, not the centre half".

I should remember how Cruyff started to wear number 14 too: maybe he came on as sub in one game and scored an iconic goal and decided to keep wearing it. He was mostly playing as a false 9 anyway I know in his prime, although often ended up on the left wing and used his famous turn there quite a bit!

I'm thinking that batch of Forest away 93/95 shirts could have been for use in cup games or something (or the one I bought might have been anyway - some others might have the Endsleigh League badge on the arm or something I think I spotted so for use in a 93/94 league game).

EDIT after seeing Congo's post: I think Italy even used to use the early numbers for defenders, then move onto midfielders and finally forwards would wear numbers from about 17, going back even a bit further to maybe 1982 or 1978 for example, in World Cups. Argentina might have used alphabetical order, except giving number 10 to Maradona, in 1982 if I remember correctly too (and maybe Ardiles wore number 1 in one World Cup!).

Zamarano for Inter was a favourite of mine 1+8 - He wanted no. 9 but it was taken by Ronaldo.
Other way round mate - Ivan did have 9, as he was already at Inter, they then signed proper Ronaldo and gave him the 9 shirt, so Zamorano had to take 18, with a cunningly placed „plus“ between the 1 and 8.

I remember Ruel Fox wearing 5 at one point too. Can't remember if it was for Spurs, Norwich or Newcastle though. Milan Baros wearing 5 for Liverpool really wound me up.

When Guedioura came back and wore 5 for us (him being a bald French Algerian cultured midfielder), I remember thinking it was like having a budget Zidane, and for that one game against West Brom it seemed like it.

The Italy 1994 and 1998 world cup squad numbers were a bit bonkers too.
In '94 numbers 2-9 were all defenders
And 2-8 in '98.
I remember the squad numbers being a bit bizarre in Serie A generally when they first had them. Didn't Costacurta wear 11 for Milan, and Desailly 8 (although he tended to play midfield for them). I wonder if that influenced Platt not to have a striker in his 1-11 when he took over as manager.

I still have my white „Away“ Forest shirt with „Guedioura 5“ on the back!

I thought Brennan might take 9 as it was his dad's number and the number he seems to been given for Wales. If Cook takes 3 then hopefully Niakhate takes 5...I can't stand it when anyone other than a centre-back wears 5
Johnson should take 10 or 11.
