2022-23 Squad Numbers

Argentina might have used alphabetical order, except giving number 10 to Maradona, in 1982 if I remember correctly too (and maybe Ardiles wore number 1 in one World Cup!).
Ah yes, I'd forgotten about Argentina. Their '78 world cup squad was done completely alphabetically, with a '1' in midfield and Goalkeepers with 3 and 5 jerseys.

Didn't England do similar in 82? With Keegan and Clemence being the exception (keeping 7 and 1 respectively). Worked out for Viv Anderson as he was 2. Brooking at 3 and Hoddle at 9 is just silly though.

I had to check that one, as I had no memory of it, but yes, you are quite correct.

I'd be happy to see that. If Grabban's not signing then he should take 7 really. I can see him keeping 20 though, as these young players like to establish continuity for their 'brand'.
Probably sees it as a 'lucky' number to some degree as well - as he had a good season for Lincoln wearing 20, followed by a good season here.

Before my time too but read it about it on https://www.squadnumbers.com/

Me too.

Quite considering getting him on the back of a new shirt (as long as it doesn’t have a shite Chinese gambling sponsor).
I have carefully reviewed Official NFFC’s Instagram content today and concluded that he currently doesn’t have a number present on his training kit.

Am I the only one who doesn't give a flying f*** about squad numbers and "Tradition"?

I'd happily have 8,9,10 and 11 as the back 4 just to annoy people 😂😂

This pre-season feels like a good opportunity to clean up the squad numbers a bit. I remember Karanka doing it a few years ago but he made a hash of it - Soudani no.2, Guedioura no.5!

Brennan wears 9 for Wales but he doesn't feel like a 'number 9' to me - 7, 10 or 11 would fit him better as one of the key players.

Worrall has always felt like more of a number 5 than 4, but we have history of centre-backs wearing 4 so I can let that go. Niakhate would slot in nicely if he took 5.

The last time we got promoted to the Premier League was when it was still 1-11 in Division 1, so everyone was assigned a squad number on promotion. Matthieu Louis-Jean got the no.2 shirt as a new signing, with Des Lyttle taking 22. Steve Stone had 7 which was spot on, Andy Johnson was given 10 (presumably because Kevin Campbell wasn't around to take it anymore) and Ian Woan was given 18 instead of his old 14.

Chris Bart-Williams got number 11, which worked as he played pretty much everywhere. He was still wearing it when he had that spell as sweeper under Platt!

Funnily enough when Argentina gave Redondo number 5, or Brazil gave it to Mauro Silva or something (I think), it kind of fits with how formations used to be in the 2-3-5 era because it was 2 and 3 as 'full-backs' (full-time defenders it meant originally), and 4-5-6 as the half-back line with number 5 being like a DM mixed with deep-lying playmaker. English teams did give the centre half (as they still called it, but basically centre back) number 5 in the WM (3-2-3-2) era though and it does make sense if you have two centre backs that one wears 5 (whether the other has 4 like Des Walker, or 6, when McGovern used to wear 4). I remember Ronnie Whelan did wear 5 and somehow it seemed to suit him on the left of midfield, or in central midfield, but Liverpool went pretty 'weird' numbers wise considering they still basically played 4-4-2 around that time (Dalglish in 7 etc).
It was a bit off topic anyway, but I realise reading that back I made a mistake - WM was 3-2-2-3! Forest played it in the '59 Cup Final I believe.

I think the „Brennan wears 9 for Wales“ is possibly due to Gareth Bale being glued to the No.11 shirt though?

Seems like the players are wearing their squad numbers tonight?

Biancone 2
Awoniyi 9
Niakhate looks like 34

I can't stand first team players wearing 30 or over. It’s okay for young players coming through but beyond that it just looks shit. If you're a defender, 2-6 should be your aim. Midfielder/Attacker 7-11. Beyond that anything in the teens or twenties is better surely.

I’m a traditionalist. Starting XI - 1 to 11.

You can have much more fun with ice hockey shirt numbers. My lottery numbers are all my favourite Panthers players over the years.

Would have thought all the squad numbers will change ahead of new season no? Still got like five players to bring and half the squad won't hit decent numbers aren't going to play.

Players like Lolley and Yates won't shift because they like those numbers.
