James David Garner

I know we have a million central midfielders but i'd still love to have him back here. Absolute bargain at that price too, although I imagine the fee will be closer to £20m considering the amount of clubs interested

Imagine we'll at least try but get the feeling he will end up elsewhere, possibly Southampton

It isn't but.... where does he fit?

Yates, Freuler, Mangala, Kouyate, O'Brien, Colback and Cafu all fighting over two spaces. Doesn't take a genius to work out the latter two will probably (if not already done) be told to find new clubs but that still leaves five players for two spots before you bring in Garner.

I guess you could group them into roles rather than spaces then it might make sense:
Physicality: Yates / Kouyate
Ball Carrying: O'Brien / Mangala
Play maker: Freuler / Garner

And chop and change the make up of the two roles for the two positions based on who we're playing? (ie vs Man City there's no need for a play-maker as we won't have any of the ball so you want physical presence and ball carrying for counter, but vs some of the weaker teams you could perhaps forgo physicality for a play-maker).

I suppose it also depends if/how often we plan on playing with 3 in central midfield
Yeah but then you shift the problem of "who's missing out" further forward where we currently have Lingard, Johnson, Awoniyi, Dennis and Surridge for the three advanced slots - with the potential for more players still to come in (Malinovskyi, Maupay?) and again assuming the likes of Mighten is found a loan.

It's great to have depth but we did so well last year by having a small core group of players who fought for each other every minute of every game. Careful balance to tread by trying to recreate that, but still have enough quality in the squad to adapt.

Won't derail this thread but one other factor of buying these players is continuity next season if we get relegated. Players like Freuler, Dennis, Malinovskyi if he joins, Mangala, Niakhate probably won't want to play in the Championship so half an eye should ensure that the wider squad, even if we lose a few in the summer, wouldn't need massive overhaul for a Championship season, so we can start in August ready and not waste time/points gelling the side.

One thing I would say is that Freuler is 30, Kouyate is 32. Definitely shorter term signings with an eye on immediate impact. Garner is such a young promising talent who will only continue improving and if available for ~£20m is a good investment regardless

Guess it just depends how we can keep everyone happy, if we think it's possible then financially I think a move for Jimmy is a no brainer

In the space of little more than a week we've gone from being desperately short in the middle to being stacked.

We sign Garner and he only gets ten or so games all season, that's ten or so more than he'd get at Manure.

All the talk of getting relegated needs putting to bed now. It's not going to happen .
It's a scenario we need to plan for.

I think we'll stay up but the reality is we're probably finishing 14th at best so our chances of staying up are about 50/50.

At that price? Absolute no brainer , he loves the club, we love him, he knows the Cooper system, he's going to improve markedly in the years ahead, gives us another dead ball option, works from box to box.

The problem is, in the short term, he won't get as many minutes as he's hoping for. If ETH had taken this position 6 weeks ago, Jimmy would've been in our starting midfield at Newcastle. I want us to get him, it fits the entire storyline of Forest on the rise. But it's less clear now how we fit him in.

So far, we know that in the build up to purchase Cooper gets to talk with the player about the role, fit, etc.

I'm sure he'll be selling it as joining the squad rather than as offering playing time.

Cooper is all about relationships built on trust and honesty. I cant see him being party to deals that don't reflect the wider intention. Itv would be hard for him to maintain relationships with players who've been sold a broken promise.

I'd love to see Garner back, but sadly I think this has come too late for us. We are well stocked in centre midfield now.

Ornstein says Everton, Southampton and Leeds have also shown interest. Goes on to say : "Forest were interested in bringing him back but appear to have recruited sufficiently in this area and it is unclear if they will revisit a deal."

Frustrating that him , Davis and Spence were key players for us, all would have been on our initial shopping list and now one is languishing in spurs reserves, one has been priced out of a move and is now on loan again and the other has been dicked around long enough to end up neither at United or where he would have had a great chance to flourish.

I really want him to come back but I don’t think we have a place for him anymore which is a shame.

Garner could easily slot in as a #10 to add more bodies in the middle like he did in a lot of games last year. At the very least he would get game time from the bench doing that instead of Cafu.

JG is still young & has time on his hands. I don't think any PL team will guarentee him game time yet.

He can play anywhere in midfield, including #10. Definitely room for a young english talent who already knows the club well, his value is only going to increase
