The Spanish government and La Liga will keep propping them up no matter how badly they run themselves.

They aren't anymore, that's the problem for them - and that's why they are selling everything for short term cash.

La Liga aren't letting them register players unless they pay off debts, of course their answer is to sell the crown jewels to fund signing a 34 year old for 50m euros.

No wonder they are desperate for the Super League, I can't believe the Prem clubs even joined it. The Premier League IS the Super League.

FC Bayern thrashed Wayne Rooney‘s DC United in a preseason friendly yesterday, 2-6.

Barcelona are the prime example as to why presidents don’t work as football club owners in my opinion, how can they justify spending what they are spending when deep down you are hamstringing the club for decades to win something during your era - kicking the can down the road so the next idiot can deal with the problems. Almost like real government! It is truly unbelievable what they are doing.

Some classic „shock“ results in the first round of the German Cup today; Stuttgarter Kickers of the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg beat Fürth of the 2. Bundesliga, 2-0 (Party Time tonight for Kickers Fans); Jahn Regensburg of the 2. Bundesliga defeated top-flight side 1. FC Köln 4-3; ten-man FC St. Pauli struggled to a 4-3 win over SV Strealen (who are coached by Nigerian legend Subday Oliseh), and SC Paderborn of the 2. Bundesliga hammered Wernigerode of the Oberliga-Sud, 10-0.

Cup Games eh, you love to see it.

I've been watching Elversberg beat Leverkusen and could quite easily have finished 7-5 or more, incredibly entertaining ,match for a neutral fan.
And now I'm watching Mane scoring on his debut against RBL; Musiala - what a player this kid is already!

He is a rare talent. I did wonder if Bayern might wobble, having lost Lewandowski, but looking at this fluid 4-3-3 they are playing today (2-0 up against Lawn Ball Sport) they are looking pretty damn good.

I am more than a bit miffed about the demise of the old Forum „European Football“ thread, because years ago I was lauding both Jamal Musiala and Benjamin Pavard, as future stars to look out for, and both have been superb tonight for Bayern, who lead 3-0 at the half, against a Leipzig side who have no answer to their incisive attacking play.

Are they having a winter break this year over there with the already mandatory imposed Qatar winter break?

Indeed; Pavard started to really mature during last season, especially in its second half, Musiala is steadily transforming into superstar. Mane instead of Sane could be the answer to last season's problems with fluency, Hernandez is also at his best at last and one can only hope that Upamecano won't be making at least on gigantic error per game.

Also, fantastic to see at half-time, German Paralympic athlete Niko Kappel (who is a VfB fan, and a bit of a local legend round here) doing feedback alongside BuLi legend Claudio Pizarro.

Brilliant stuff.

And the teams come out for the second half, you see Thomas Müller absolutely in the ear of Jamal Musiala - even though Bayern are 3-0 up, the midfield legend is absolutely giving it to the young man about what he should be doing.

England have properly missed a player, there, as Musiala has declared for Germany (And he could have played for the Three Lions).

Proper stop start season then? Helps with players returning from injury I suppose? Is it for bad weather they have it or just for a break?

Yes, stop-start. But that’s what you get with a winter World Cup

Meanwhile in the Super Cup, Thomas Müller is just doing Thomas Müller things.

Bayern - and Germany - will be poorer sides in a year or two when he decides he’s had enough and goes off to breed horses.

This game shows why Bundesliga and German football in general is so entertaining; Liverpool - City: even though quite good too it was like watching a a game of chess compared to this beauty.

Calvin Bassey had a debut to forget in the Dutch Super Cup, subbed on in the 62nd minute with the scores level at 2 apiece, his immediate impact is to help Ajax concede 2 goals to go 4-2 behind then he steps up his influence and gets a straight red for what can best be described as a leg breaker challenge. In total he was on the pitch for 17 minutes, im sure his manager wanted him to make a difference but probably for Ajax rather than PSV!
