Also, if you haven’t already done so Zoe, you might want to give HMRC a quick bell - they might be able to offer tips on escrow service for charitable giving, as well as maybe other advice on anything you need to document.

Is it possible to give HMRC a quick bell? In my experience it's about as tricky as getting through to Sky TV.

All this is so typical of the problems caused to ordinary law abiding people by the Governments anti money laundering legislation and the banks anti fraud systems. The annoying thing is that Government Anti money laundering legislation doesn't stop money launderers any more than the banks anti fraud systems stop fraud. they just cause ordinary people nothing but problems trying to live their day to lives or in this case someone trying to do nothing but good enormous amounts of inconvenience, stress and problems

Dunno VP, I don’t have to call them much anymore

I am fortunate that if I need assistance with my tax affairs locally, I can actually walk to the Stuttgart Finanzamt (Tax Office) which is a leisurely 10 minute stroll from my apartment, down in the Rotebuhlplatz, and you can wander in, take a ticket, and you get to speak to a real person, face-to-face, which is pretty useful.

There's no place like home...

I heard Zoe bought a one way ticket to Brazil for some reason.
I've had a nightmare trying to sort an account for JG who have had me jump through allsorts of hoops. I spoke to th3 charity yesterday and sent an initial £1 payment to make sure I had the correct info which they've confirmed has hit the account this morning.

I have today started the withdrawal from JG, which will take them 4-6 days apparently as fees have to be calculated, gitbags, and as soon as I get it I'll then transfer it across. Martin House are doing an official letter of thanks, which I will then post on SM

You should make an offer for Derby with it. Maybe Kirchner's money was tied up in JG too!

Zoe‘s fundraiser is probably worth more than Derby now!

Well done Zoe.
I know exactly where you are coming from. As a trustee for a small local charity I have just returned a 20 page return to the bank justifying the charity's bank account status, to make sure that we are not the Russian KGB or a Colombian drug cartel.

The thing is JG could have just agreed to pay it direct to the charity but no, cos it was set up in my name it has to come.to my account. Rules innit.

So I set up a brand new account with HSBC. Got card, got pin. Not yet got activation code for online banking, some weeks on. So can't access to show transactions. So JG won't accept this account without a statement, which I can't get cos HSBC are crap at sending out activation code. So.ive had to use my normal account anyway, cos the time limit for submitting bank details was today, after which the JG page and donations gets frozen. I didn't want to use my account I wanted a clean slate account but ive been forced to. JG have been an absolute pain in the arse tbh.

Chris Kirchner feels your pain.

Seriously though, it sounds like a farce

I was thinking that £700+ was outrageous but with a 25p fee per donation it soon adds up.

With regards the interest - I paid mine at the time of my donation - now I can’t remember if that was optional or compulsory - but the total showing on JG must be the gross amount - surely it would be better for all concerned if they showed the gross amount and the net amount so nothing hidden - everything out in the open and up front from the outset.

I don’t begrudge them charging a small amount, as they obviously have to pay for the website and an unknown amount of admin staff, but I think they should just be a bit better at displaying the costs upfront - it could just be coded into the software.

I paid an extra (voluntary) amount at the time of the donation for the administration of the site too and it didn't show in the donation amount.

I say voluntary, it wasn't clear at the time whether it was or not, though the amount was variable. If I'd known they were going to take money off of the donation too I wouldn't have done it.

Their fees for GBP transactions from the UK are 25p per donation + 2.9% of the amount of the donation, a charge of 54p for a £10 donation, 83p on a £20 donation. US donations would have different rates which could include extra charges for converting USD to GBP.

Yes I did the same,.and also wouldn't have done it had I known what a chunk they'd take at the end

Don't let the fees get you down though, remember that your initial aim was to raise £500!
Oh indeed, just a bit disheartened at the huge chunk gone, and I've posted the screenshot showing this on SM as obviously everyone knows it went over over 16k and so the lower amount needs explaining.
