Nuno Da Costa

Brentford success in recruitment is because they pick players for a position, rather than recruit then try to shoehorn players into a squad.

Nuno could well have been a success for us if we recruited him specifically for his strengths with a clearly defined role in the team to make use of them. We didn’t, we just decided we needed tall fast players (Diakhaby, Nuno, Ameobi, Adomah et al) so signed him up on that basis.

The recruitment under Dane Murphy will likely be the former rather than the latter approach.

FWIW I think Nuno probably would offer us the same as Lyle Taylor on a much reduced wage in a Steve Cooper side but that again is me trying to find a position for him, rather than him being brought into the club for that reason.

The vast majority of footballers are very capable in the right circumstances. I often think about the advice someone gave me once - the failing of the employee is as much the failing of the manager. In the football sense this applies also to the senior leadership as the man in the head coach seat.

We sort of did need pace and power... but I'm not sure Da Costa is that. He's reasonably quick and reasonably tall but he's not like a Tyson or a a Jake Cooper is he? I'm really not sure why we were so drawn to him, according to reports we'd been chasing him for up to two years before he finally made the move. Weird.

Anyway, like you say I think Dane will be much more considered in his signings, and we'll be willing to look further to find them, and give chances to players from lower divisions in which previous seasons we may have assumed couldn't have made the jump because the gap was so big.

I just don’t know about DaCosta because I’ve not seen enough of him play (and not in his “favoured position and formation” to echo another thread and wind tits up a bit!).
Tgat being said forwards at our level and budget will always come with risk so I’m less down on the recruitment strategy here other than his age which I think would scupper him under the Dane modus operandi. I’ll bet that had he been 23 when he signed it would have been 20x easier to shift him on when he failed to fit….

I asked a twitter account that seems to be a news account regarding Caen and this is what they send regarding Da Costa:

“Hi thank you for all my post. He took a long time to play because he arrived at our home injured. After that, he won his place of holder (because one of our attackers was very seriously injured). He plays in pointe with another striker in a 352. He has already scored several goals. He was quite critical of the way he was treated by Forrest.”

2 goals in 7 in the league and one goal in the their one game in the French league cup.

I asked about his performances and they said:

“Yes overall pretty good. In Caen, we have known him for a long time, especially since his very good time in Strasbourg and for the moment he is, as we expected, interesting.”

Good luck to the lad. Like a lot of players I’m not sure he was ever given the chances he needed at Forest yo no show what he could, or couldn’t do. Hope he manages to make a living in France!

With that recruitment regime's strike rate, I don't think we're missing much to be honest Otis.

He couldn't even score, or threaten goal, in his preferred position when playing pre-season friendlies against lower league opposition anyway.

I can't say I was aware of his pre-season performances for us Alf, but slightly in his defence, I'd suggest that those kind of games possibly aren't ideal for judging a player, as they're essentially about gaining match sharpness.

Anyway, as others have said, good luck to him if he can secure a move back to France, be it next month or next summer.

Didn’t Vellios bang in a load of goals in preseason a few years back, the do f*** all during the season? I may have remembered that wrong mind you.

He banged in a load pre-season and then wasn't really given much of a chance when the season started. He played a couple of games, looked decent in them, scored in at least one.

Then we shipped him out.

I always thought Vellios was a decent player, not just a lump up front, and could have done a job for us. But then, the coaching staff know the players much better.

That goal against Rotherham remains one of the best I've seen in the flesh, more for speed of thought and the athleticism/reactions to carry it out.

Yeah, a few of them early this season were streamed and Da Costa started up top. Looked awful. Don't get me wrong, worked a fair bit so wouldn't say he didn't try, but absolutely no threat at all and really looked out of his depth. But yeah it was a pre-season.

Similar to Carvalho though, there comes a point when players start having to take these opportunities. Like I say, if he was signed on the back of similar methods as to what we're employing now, namely very well researched data, then I'd be inclined to wait it out longer. But he wasn't. And in half a season's loan away from us he's scored 2 goals in the French second division. To say he's 31 in Feb, not only do I think that's a standard we need to look to improve on, but I also think that he doesn't fit Murphs MO either.

Good luck to the bloke, and if folk want to hang their hats on a triumphant return like they are with Carvalho fair play.

His age was the biggest thing for me Alf. Had he been 23 theres always latitude for improvement (if the basically ability or attributes are there) or a sale that mitigates losses, but at 30 odd its a different ball game. As you say that will change under Dane for sure-that doesn't mean there won't be other risks mind because taking "talented" youngsters and improving them is a risky business in itself-particularly forwards where every club has a business plan that includes unearthing the next Ian Wright for nowt and making 35M on the deal...

I can't quite see how a player with a name like Nuno Da Costa could be so poor. Harry Arter on the other hand..
